((SOS Lab, Deck 10, USS Eagle))
The quiet of the lab didn’t last long.
Drex had known that working in solitude, especially outside his quarters, was wishful thinking. For little less than one hour, though, it had worked.
The SOS Lab was quiet, out of the way, and perfect for digging into the data that had been haunting him since the mission through the nebula.
Unfortunately, he was not the only one with that idea.
The lab doors hissed open, and Dr. Noemi Lim stepped inside.
Drex immediately toyed with the idea of abandoning his plan and leaving the lab altogether. Of all the crew members, those with any empathic or telepathic abilities were the last ones he wanted to meet, much less talk to, much less work with.
That had been on a Monday. Now he was stuck in a week made entirely of Tuesdays.
He shifted in his chair, resisting the urge to bolt. But leaving meant giving up more than just the lab. It meant giving up the chance to understand what had happened to him, and that was not an option. Noemi knew about his discomfort with empaths. She knew what he had done in the nebula. And she probably had at least some of the pieces he was missing.
He exhaled and made himself stay.
Collaboration, as much as he hated it, was probably the best option.
Drex: No... I was just... ::he exhales, trying to find the words:: I mean…yeah. Any help would be... helpful.
Noemi perked up at his response and stepped closer, holding up a data drive.
Lim: I’ve got the brain scans we’ve collected of those that were affected.
Drex: And what did you find? :: ::He nudged his chair aside to give her room at the console.::
Lim: Good news is everyone’s scans now match the records we have. The bad news is we don’t have enough scans from when we were in the nebula so it’s hard to know how everyone was affected.
Drex nodded thoughtfully. The external sensor data had its own gaps, but they were Starfleet and they could make something out of what little they had.
Drex: Maybe we should change our approach. ::He turned toward the console and began typing as he spoke.:: You have my scans, from before the nebula, during, and now. You’re in some of the nightmares I’ve had. On the Ifir… you were there, weren’t you? ::He paused for just a second, he didn’t need her answer to know.:: I think we can create a simulation. Feed the data into the computer, let it fill in the blanks between what we know and what we experienced.
The door to the lab hissed behind them and Noemi turned to see who entered.
Lim: Ah hello?
Drex caught the reflection of the newcomer in the console screen. He sighed inwardly. Had the lab suddenly become the meeting hub for nebula analysis?
His initial irritation melted into reluctant resignation. As much as he resented the intrusion, they did need help. That was Starfleet. That was the job.
He offered a small, reserved smile, stopping his typing as he half-turned toward the new arrival.
Drex: Welcome… Are you here to share your thoughts and your findings about the crazy nebula?
Anyone: Response
Drex nodded once.
Drex: I was reading through some data before Dr. Lim arrived. We were discussing the idea of building a simulation, from baseline medical scans to the data collected inside the nebula. Plug in everything we know, see what emerges.
Lim / Anyone : Response
Drex: It’s just one idea. I think the computer might generate more than one possible path that leads us to the scenario we want. But if you’ve got a better approach, please, let’s hear it.
