((Captain’s Office, Deck One, USS Eagle-A))

Genkos inclined his head towards Drex, then raised an eyebrow. He was going to have to confront this doubt of Drex’s, head on. It seemed the man had hesitancy around his own abilities and his apparent suspicion of Genkos’ own telepathic abilities.

Adea: When you say that I would have read the Alomians better, what do you mean?

Drex: I mean... you would have had a clearer sense of them as people, Sir. You’d have picked up details I didn’t.

Genkos’ jawline tightened as he clenched his teeth. It seemed like Drex was still dancing around the issue.

Adea: Because I’m a telepath?

Drex: The way you read a room... that’s not unique. But it’s something others learn over time. ::A thoughtful pause:: Joined Trills carry lifetimes of experience. Denobulans... Well, we have the advantage of time to observe, to make mistakes, to adjust. ::A brief breath:: But I’m still at the point where I rely on what I’m told and what I think I see.

Genkos could feel a slight boiling of anger in the very pit of his stomach but he released it, deciding instead to remain professional and not take it personally.

Adea: ::his voice calm and even:: The rest of us are no different.

The Denobulan let the silence settle for a moment, which Genkos thought was the right choice. Perhaps the man was merely choosing his words wrong, but Genkos had a small niggling doubt at the back of his mind about his choice of First Officer for the first time.

Drex: May I ask you something, Sir? ::Genkos inclined his head, curious about what he was going to be asked:: When you say you feel doubt as well...  What do you rely on most in those moments? ::He paused, taking a brief breath::  Because I can observe people in front of me, but I don’t always know which signals matter until it’s too late.

Genkos raised an eyebrow, and felt the doubt and anger start to ebb away. He needed to remember that Drex was a lot less experienced than him, and Genkos had had a lot more experience when he was made a First Officer.

Adea: Two things. The first is instinct - that will come with time. The other is my crew. Trust them to do their best for you.

Drex: Response

Genkos let out a low breath, and looked at him for a moment. There was a big barrier in the way of Drex, and Genkos needed him to confront it.

Adea: The only thing is Drex, is that you need to trust yourself. You may or may not know that on my first away team as an Ensign, a careless word caused a riot. If I can come back from that to trusting myself and making Captain, you can survive as First Officer.

Drex: Response

Captain Genkos Adea MD

Commanding Officer

USS Eagle-A

G239502GS0

"You know, I'm really easy to get along with most of the time, but I don't like bullies and I don't like threats, and I don't like you, Culluh. You can try and stop us from getting to the truth but I promise you that if you do I will respond with all the 'unique technologies' at my command." - Kathryn Janeway
