to Denali Station – StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG
((Awards Ceremony, Rooftop Garden Patio, Soldotna))
Alex's time on the Excalibur had been brief. He only spent a few months there before he got reassigned to the Constitution. But that didn’t mean he didn’t remember his time at Excalibur or who its captain was.
Falt: Ships arrive here all the time, and we don't require Starfleet vessels to inform us ahead of time. I'd caution against reading too much into it.
oO Good to know. I thought Starfleet didn’t pass through here that much, perhaps I was wrong. Oo
DeVeau: It’s possible the Excalibur did bring someone, but it’s impossible to say that for certain, or even who at this point. We’ll have to wait.
Drex: There have been a lot of rumors and lower decks have been making bets for days. What is your opinion, Commander Williams?
Williams: It's been 10 years ago, but I did serve on that ship. I happen to know its captain and it's not unlikely that after 10 years she might be looking for a career change. If you want to make a bet, I'd put my money on Captain Nicholotti.
Falt: Interesting, although it is obviously only a hunch at this stage. At the risk of being a party pooper please don't share any theories with the crew at this stage. Bar talk amongst the senior staff is fine, but we must be mindful of the need for rumour control too. Unless our new CO turns up of course. In which case.
Alex nodded, letting the man know he understood and would not share his assumptions with the rest of the crew.
DeVeau: We’ll take it as it comes. Whoever they are, they will be given a proper welcome upon their arrival.
Drex: Do we have fireworks left from Commander Falt’s promotion and ready just in case?
Williams: Fireworks? Under normal circumstances, I would consider that a security risk. But given the occasion, I guess I can allow it. Hehe
With a nod, the FO drained the last of his drink and made it clear it was time for something else.
Falt: Now, if you'll excuse me. With Oddas gone the awards presentation falls to me and I think it's time I get started.
DeVeau: Of course.
Williams: Looking forward to your speech, good luck.
Setting down his glass, the executive officer left them and headed for the central stage.
DeVeau: Another awards ceremony.
Drex: Would you prefer to be somewhere else? :: in a gentle tone ::
Williams: I missed it, to be honest. I look forward to this one and see what Commander Falt has to say. A good speech goes a long way. You disagree?
He looked at DeVeau
DeVeau: Oh no, I’m quite glad for it. When missions go awry, which I know is often, I’m happy to see us at a place where we can award the good work by those who helped us return safely.
Drex: I’m glad we got out of that basement. :: He sighed. ::
With one last sip the science officer emptied the glass, then placed it on the table nearby. He needed his hand free to clap the good officers Falt’s was going to reward.
Williams: Well, for what it's worth, having some massive dragons fly over your head wasn’t as much fun as it sounded either.
DeVeau: It would be nice to have one mission go as planned, wouldn’t it?
Williams: Well if everything goes as planned, there wouldn’t be much fun or excitement. You have to live a little. If you ask me.
She smiled a little ruefully.
Drex: Are you telling me that we had plans? I grew up believing that only bad guys had plans.
Alex laughed, pleased to know he wasn’t the only one who enjoyed a good joke every now and then.
oO I should get to know this guy a little better after this ceremony. I bet there is a possible friendship here. With so few people I know here, it cant hurt to invest in making new friends. Oo
Williams: I think the bad guys often wish they had thought things through a bit more.
Drex: Oh well, you surely know better than me. :: He smiled ::
DeVeau: Response
The side lights dimmed and brightened three times, then remained low, while a brighter beam of light first illuminated the back of the stage and then ran along the floor toward the center and the speaker's platform.
Drex: New special effects :: He commented amusedly ::
Williams: An old Earth trick, to let everyone know its time to get to your seats. Should we asl well? I am new to the setting at a starbase.
DeVeau: Response
With the ceremony officially starting Alex put his glass of wine on the bar so he had his hands free. For now he folded them over his chest, waiting for what was to come.
