Kaybay: What could we provide that would help you, Fleet Captain? Manpower, information? A few crates of precision explosives?

Oddas: Any explosives, or other munitions you have will remain on your ship, is that understood? I will not have them running amok through the city.

Kaybay relaxed in his seat. He had no skin in the game yet, other than a broker's fee. And frankly, he was enjoying himself. Even if he had yet to fully understand what game was being played... keeping in mind that all players were perhaps not playing with the same rules.

That, and he had a Reman corsair in line for those explosives. He wouldn’t have minded if the Federation had decided to outbid the miser, though.

Kaybay: I am an arms trader, as you would know…

Oddas: ::more forcibly:: And let me be clear, :: she realized she had interrupted the man :: if I find anything linking those explosives, or anything on your ship ::she was facing the Ferengi but stood and addressed the room:: to what occurred this morning, it will be confiscated, and I will not hesitate to bring down the full weight of Federation law on the perpetrators.

The Ferengi’s impression shifted in a split second from genial to thoroughly unimpressed.

Kaybay: I would ask you to rephrase, Fleet Captain. That sentence could be misconstrued as an accusation.

Oddas: I assure you that's not the case, but I prefer to look at things one thing at a time, and in this case that means we can focus on the purpose of the visit while we ascertain the causes of the emergency. I am quite sure we will get to the bottom of it satisfactorily, one way or another.

Fleet Captain Oddas Aria was certainly many things, but a career diplomat she was not. Fortunately, that put Kaybay in the position of having the moral high ground – something that, to be honest, he was not overly used to, given that his moral ground usually qualified as a tripping hazard in the sewers.

Dakir: ::at Oddas:: Perhaps a short recess is in order, Fleet Captain? ::at the others:: Maybe we could have something to drink, to eat?

Profit be upon that surprisingly smooth spoonhead. Kaybay gave her a respectful nod, and got up to leave the room with the other delegates, after a round of approval. Maybe the discussion would resume on a better footing after some cooldown time.

((Replimat, Level 1, Soldotna))

And of course, chance had it that he found himself standing in the replimat next to the Bajoran. Which would certainly make for a wonderful lunch conversation.

Fortunately, the Mithglin delegate came to his – their, he was sure – rescue.

Kir: Daimon, Captain, would you care to join me for a drink?

The Ferengi smiled, all pointy teeth and honey, and gave the Mithglin a little bow.

Kaybay: That would be my greatest pleasure, Adjudicator.

Oddas: Response

Kir: I was told a number of Mithgiln food and drinks had been sent ahead to be loaded into your replicators.

Smelling profit on the winds, Kaybay eagerly followed the winged alien towards the replicator, watching as they ordered a pot of a fragrant hot beverage. For his part, he was pleased to find that they the replicator could offer snail juice with extra shells. Apparently the Federation outpost had enough Ferengi among them to warrant this option? Interesting.

Oddas: Response

Kaybay: This beverage smells delicious.

Kir: You’re more than welcome to try, it’s an herbal tea from the province I grew up in, I like it, but I don’t know how it meshes for palettes other than Mithgiln.

Oddas : Response

The Ferengi left to replicate a couple of extra cups, and left one by Oddas as he came back to the table. A small peace offering. The rule about declaring peace had always been one of his favourites.

Kaybay: I am willing to try everything once, except bankruptcy.

Even if it was truly vile sludge, it was exotic. There were people out there that did not have any contact with the Mithglin, and who would pay a premium for a rare alien herbal blend. They did not need to know that it initially came from a Federation Replimat, of course. Rule 39: Don’t tell customers more than they need to know.

Kir/Oddas: Response

The Ferengi businessman smelled his drink, luxuriating in its warmth, before taking a prudent sip.

The taste was… surprising. Not particularly in a good way. Perhaps he did not have the palate for it, but it tasted like plomeek soup, or Vulcan politics. As bland and boring as could be. He turned the cup in his hands thoughtfully before taking another sip.

Kaybay: Maybe I do not have the taste buds for it, but I have the same reaction to tea in general. Does it have any property apart from its taste and warmth?

He knew people who would buy it anyway, if only by pure snobbism. Maybe with some added spice.

Kir/Oddas: Response

Kaybay: Ah, but this is exactly what I came here to find, Adjudicator. New neighbours, new places, new opportunities.
