((USS
Darwin, Deck 1, Conference room))
:: Captain Renos had gathered some of the department heads to introduce them to
the Multispecies Initiative and had come to the final topic of the day –
catering. This hadn’t been an extensive discussion but everyone had
participated to come extent and knew what needed to be done in preparation for
the new crew coming aboard. ::
Renos: On
another note catering… I don’t know if we’re likely to have problems with the
herbivores having to eat next to the more carnivorous species. I don’t want to
segregate people unnecessarily without trying to make things work as this is
about everyone coming together for better understanding, learning to live and
work with each other.
Lyldra:
The mess hall will be one of the best places to exchange ideas and culture.
Food preparation and eating together lead to the development of language in
almost every species of our galaxy it should come naturally to many to share
over their meals.
Traenor:
Don't forget the lounge. A casual, relaxed atmosphere is a perfect place
to conduct cultural exchange.
:: That was a very good point and Renos was glad that he’d thought to mention
it. Creating separate areas or dividing up what space they had would create a
division that was more likely to push people apart than bring them together. If
there was anyone who truly had a problem sitting near someone else then there
were other, better options. ::
Thomas:
Yeah, you’re right, they will be useful places.
Renos: Similarly, there are a few species who really despise replicated foods.
We’ll be dedicating a little more space to growing fresh foods and on a related
note part of the arboretum will be used for growing pharmaceutical plants.
Jorey: Response
Lyldra: I would not mind helping out in the gardening I could even transplant
some of the bolain seaweed and kelp from the small tank in my quarters for
those used to sea plants as a foodstuff.
:: It was an unexpected offer, but a welcome one. While the ship did have a few
botanists, gardening could be therapeutic and perhaps Lyldra would be
introducing them to something new. There was definitely the potential for this
to be mutually beneficial for all. Renos wondered how many other people there
were aboard with an interest in gardening or plant life who had never
considered the possibility of helping with the arboretum. Cogs began to turn in
nir head. ::
Renos: That would be most welcome. I see no reason why you can’t get involved.
I’m sure there are other crew who would assume it off limits to all but the
botanists who might like to get involved too. I’m sure we can arrange for one
of the botanists to act as head gardener to manage the space and ensure that
people can have a chance to help, without accidentally uprooting pharmaceuticals,
food or someone else’s rare plant… ::With enthusiasm::
Traenor: I like your idea, Ensign. ::wide grin:: You've just
appointed yourself our resident aquabotanist! All kidding aside, do you
have a lot of experience with underwater flora?
Lyldra: I like to garden as a hobby and I lived underwater for a few years so I
do have experience with sea plants.
:: Bolarus had a few underwater cities so Renos wondered if that was what she
was referring to or perhaps one of the other water worlds of the Federation.::
Traenor: That's good to know, and don't be surprised if I send a scientist
knocking on your door looking for pointers. Of course, we have plenty of
lab space, so if you'd ever like to experiment with other forms of gardening,
don't hesitate to come see me and I'll set you up.
Lyldra: response
Renos: Well, unless there’s anything else I think we’re about ready to wrap
this meeting up.
Thomas: Well Captain Engineering will be ready to accept any new staff and to
assist with any refitting and changing of quarters or other areas.
Manius: I’ll get to work right away in getting myself and my team up to-date.
To begin with we’ll split the work between us, otherwise we might all accidentally
end up reading up on the same species, to the detriment of others. We’ll make
sure we’re all as well versed in them all as we can be ultimately. I’ll order
in any additional supplies we’ll need to treat the new additions also.
Traenor/Lyldra/Jorey: Response
Renos: Excellent,
that’s what I like to hear. Does anyone anticipate any problems?
Thomas: Well, with the extra crew members, I don’t see a problem. Unless
the modifications are quite extensive, then I might ask for some free science
officers for a hand if possible.
:: That was a reasonable request. When it came to things like ensuring aquatic quarters
had the right water, or atmosphere to breathe they would be right on point. You
couldn’t house a Selkie in any old water, they wanted to live in the same water
they had on Pacifica and if that couldn’t be achieved the wonders of
replication could ensure that in terms of oxygenation, nutrient and chemical
balance, even temperature, that it was spot on. There was a lot a science
officer could do to directly help prepare for the new arrivals so it was good
to get them involved. ::
Traenor: Response
Renos: Thank you Mister Traenor, that would be great. Take a look, paying particular
attention to those difficult adjustments. You’ll be able to tell better than
anyone how long it’s likely to take and what you can achieve with the people
you have. If the numbers don’t add up then let me know. We can pull as much
help as we need from the station. Not to mention some of the new recruits
themselves will be eager to start. Let’s see. ::Ne glanced at the PADD, and
used a finger to find the roster:: Among others… there’s a maintenance
technician and an engineer coming. We’ve also got a quartermaster who can be
put to task in helping to ensure we have all the food and other various things
we’ll need.
Thomas: Yeah, that will work. Thanks.
Jorey/Lyldra: Response
Renos: Alright, I think that’s it then. Thank you for your time. I know it’s a
busy time but try to enjoy some of your remaining leave. ::Smiling::
Manius: Thanks. I best get started on this… by your leave…
:: He got up and made for the exit and he wasn’t the only one. Lyldra was by
his side and there were others hot on his tail. He figured now might be a good
time to catch up with her about those things he had mentioned at the beginning
on their meeting. Renos remained behind for a few minutes in case anyone had
any last things they wanted to talk about. ::
