((Sickbay, Deck 5 - USS Icarus))

Lystra: I think that means there’s two of them. It feels like they're having trouble actually typing. Maybe because of being disconnected? ::she hoped it was because they were hurt:: Alright, I’ll ask. [We can’t see or hear you, but you can see us. Can you hear us? Is anyone injured? We think you may be out of phase or disconnected from reality somehow. Have you been like this for the whole 100 years since the Icarus went missing?]

There seemed to be a long wait after the message was sent.

Brexis: Maybe they're having a hard time responding. I can’t imagine it would be easy or what kind of energy they have to use to get the messages through.

Foster: That’s a good point – I don’t think they’re accessing the PADD through corporeal means.

Lystra: That’s not something I ever thought I’d hear someone say, but that doesn’t sound like an easy thing to do.

PADD: [ What year it is? ]

Charlotte noticed Lystra adjusted the link to make it easier for Cade and Charlotte to dictate questions for the phased out folks.

Brexis: [The current year is 2403. Can you tell us how to make it easier for you to communicate with us.] ::Looking between Lystra and Cade:: Maybe there is something easier for them.

Foster: A hundred years ago? They should have some neural interface equipment in case any crew suffered a traumatic brain injury. Neuroregen unit, and an interface headpiece. That might be the msot efficacious communication if they’re out of phase. We’d just have to hook the neural interface up to a PADD instead of the regeneration until. ::he looked towards Lystra:: Think you can do that, Kid?

That seemed to perk Lystra up.

Lystra: Hey…yeah. Actually I might. The first NIU that I used as a kid was one almost as old as that model. If it’s still in good condition I should be able to jury rig something. Just as long as we have the whole thing.

Again, she spoke so the PADD could pick up her words.

Brexis: [Our crew is attempting to restore power to the entire ship. Please keep trying to talk with us.]

PADD: [ Difficult to interact, requires focus … .it numbs … hands.]

Foster: Let me just look through here…

She looked to see Cade doing a little more breaking and entering in the sickbay.

Lystra: Here’s hoping they had one. ::to Brexis:: We should probably request the Aleek-Om beam over some extra PADDs or a small charging unit so we can keep ours going until the ship systems are restored.

Brexis: Good thinking.

Cade successfully made his way into another spot with more equipment. She really wanted to know where he learned to do all of that.

Foster: Ah, here we go! Neural interface unit!

He waved it around in Lystra's direction.

Lystra: That’s great! It looks like it’s in good shape, so toss it over grumps. We’ll see if we can power it.

Brexis: ::Raising her eyebrows:: Don’t look at me. I don’t even know what that thing does, let alone if it can be powered.

Her background in security and Strategic Operations made for one clueless officer when it came to medical equipment.

Foster: It should have an internal power cell so it can be remotely operated, which is always the preferred method in a bust sickbay, but also knowing the age I’m guessing there’s a hidden port under the casing which would allow you to hardwire it into another device. That’s called old fashioned backup systems.

Lystra: Agreed. Thankfully the PADD still has a good charge level left.

The device was passed over to Lystra and she checked it out before pulling out some of the cables and plugging it into her PADDs port.

PADD: [Areyou goin. To help .s comm.nicate with you wit. The ne.ral devic.?]

Foster: I think it would be easier and less resistance to process our ghost-like crew’s communication if they have an interface that will more easily pick up their language. That should, in theory, allow them to give us far more length and in depth information.

Lystra: Sounds like a good idea. And based on the message they just sent us, it looks like they figured out what you’re thinking. They’re asking if we’re going to use this to communicate with them.

Charlotte looked between Cade and Lystra.

Brexis: That would make sense if one of the people here is the CMO Douffet. He probably knows this equipment better than anyone.

PADD: [What do you ne.d us to d. on our si.de?]

Lystra continued to check out the device that she had hooked up to her PADD.

Lystra: That’s a good question. Aside from standing with their head in this thing, what shall we have them do? ::she dictated a massage for their ghostly friends:: [We’re discussing that, one moment please.]

Brexis: I wish we had some cool hold music to have them listen to in between messages.

She chuckled to herself. Finding her quip funnier than it should have been.

Foster/PADD: Response

Lystra: We can’t have it floating around. Cade, cna you hold it in place for them? [The Neural Interface has power. Can one of you see if you can fit your head inside it and do the same thing you did with the PADD? Try thinking of your response.]

Charlotte held her breath, waiting to see if a response was going to come through and if it would be more clear than before.

Brexis: ::Softly:: Come on ghost buddies. You can do it.

Foster/PADD: Response

The sound of the commbadges chirping startled her a bit in the silence of the moment.

S’jenes: =/\= All away teams, this is S’jenes, We have made contact with one of the apparitions. The entity identified herself as Lieutenant Junior Grade Barb Byrnes, communications officer of the Icarus. Based upon the information obtained during the exchange, we currently assess that the apparitions are phase-shifted survivors rather than residual energy phenomena. We established communication using the tricorders as a localized damping field and electromagnetic carrier waves to temporarily synchronize phases which has allowed for 32 seconds of direct communication. We are investigating ways of extending said communication and have identified a repeating pattern within the phase variance which may be key to further communication. If your teams have any relevant findings or suggestions, please advise. S’Jenes out. =/\=

Lystra looked between Cade and Charlotte with a smile. It was good someone had already established what seemed like solid communication with the phased out crew.

Lystra: =/\= That’s great! We’ve been able to establish fairly reliable contact through PADDs and now with a Neural Interface Unit. We’ve located the Icarus’ Chief Medical Officer. We’ll try to get more information as soon as we can. Lystra out. =/\= ::she grinned at the others:: We have three tricorders with us. Do we think that’ll be enough to try and replicate what S’Jenes just told everyone?

Brexis: It’s worth a shot. But I think you two seem to have a better handle on this than I do.

She gave them a shy smirk. It wasn’t that she didn’t have experience, it just happened she didn’t have any when it came to phased-out one hundred year old ghost crews and how to communicate with them. But there was a first for everything.

Foster/PADD: Response

The Sec-Tac officer looked between her fellow officers and the device.

Lystra: What if instead of making a field around the people, if we focused the localized damping field to just the NIU? Would it be possible to phase it enough to make it easier for the doctor and his crewmate to use it without exerting themselves so much? ::she again dictated to their ghostly companions:: [Our shipmates figured out a temporary way to get direct contact for a few seconds, we’re going to see if we can replicate it. Please, sit tight. We’re going to do everything we can to help you and your crew.]

Brexis: I’m sure there’s got to be a way. ::To Lystra:: Should we still get the Aleek-Om to beam us over some supplies?

Foster/PADD/Lystra: Response

She took a long deep breath.

Brexis: Alright. What do you need me to do? How can I help?

Foster/PADD/Lystra: Response

Charlotte looked between her two crewmates.

Brexis: I can do that.

Foster/PADD/Lystra: Response
