((A Geyser Valley, Northern Hemisphere, Peekaboo))
A type of bird suddenly flew in, landing on Maramox and startling Indrid but he managed to maintain his grip on the ensign.
It looked at them using eye stalks on its wings. The bird was dark green and it had one bioluminescent tail feather that was longer than the rest.
Perax: This place keeps getting weirder. I keep expecting a white rabbit with a pocket watch. ::he noticed the confused looks he got:: I had a friend at the Academy. She insisted that I read classic Earth literature. It was enjoyable mostly.
Yirah: I'm not too familiar with classic Earth literature.
Lystra: I understood that reference! My people borrow everything from all cultures, so I’ve dived into the ship’s database about Earth culture more than a few times. Their literature is as fun as it is…odd. Sometimes.
Yirah: I did once try a holo-novel based on what I was told was originally an Earth book.
Lystra: Ooh, which one? What was it about?
Yirah: It took place in 19th century England. During that time marrying someone with monetary wealth was very important. So this mom is trying to get her daughters wealthy husbands but it's made even more difficult with the zombie outbreak.
Lystra: Zombies are a weird concept.
Perax: ::he whinced slightly:: I’ve never been fond of the horror genre. I prefer suspense, though I found a couple authors that could successfully sit on the edge of the two genres.
Yirah: Interesting that we haven't scared the bird. Maybe it's used to larger creatures, or we don't remind it of any predators that it may have.
Lystra: Hmm, true. Could it be that it’s used to bipedal creatures because of whomever else is on this planet with us?
Perax: It’s possible that it is used to another bipedal species, but it’s more likely that it simply has no reason to fear us.
Lystra: I hope that it’s not a carrion eater and thinks Maramox is dead. Should we risk trying to move with it sitting on him like that?
Perax: Well, he hasn’t moved so far. We might be able to risk moving them both further.
Indrid nodded.
Lystra: I could fire a few shots in the air to try and scare it away, but who knows if that’ll work or incite it to bite one of you. ::she looked closer and shook her head:: That thing’s got a lot of teeth and ::she shined the torch on it, which made the eye stalks look her way:: I think there’s venom in those fangs. Or it just drools, but it looks like those teeth have something dripping out of them.
Yirah: The bird hasn’t been a problem, let's not do something that may make it one…
Perax: ::he pulled out his tricorder while balancing Maramox’s legs in one hand extremely briefly:: the bird is strange. ::he glanced at the readings:: the nervous system is unique to say the least. The feathers seem to contain chrondite, and the drool is Lysozyme, which the tricorder claims is a natural animal produced antibiotic. ::he put up the tricorder and took Maramox’s legs in his hands again::
Yirah: Antibiotic? Hopefully the bird isn't sick.
oO Last thing we need is a sick bird on a hurt crewmember. Oo
Lystra: Like you said, this place is weird. Do you two think you can walk with its extra weight? The longer we stand here the heavier he's gonna get.
Perax: A more detailed scan can be done later. We need to keep moving. I don’t like the idea of whoever attacked us finding us again while we are weighed down. Somehow I don’t think they have stopped watching us.
Lystra: Agreed. ::she tucked the fruit into her pack:: Best to assume with our lights that they know precisely where we are. Especially since the runabout isn’t easy to conceal.
Yirah: At least those fruit trees are the tallest plants we’ve seen so far. They’ll know where we are but once out in the geyser field they’ll be easier to spot too.
The short broad-leaved plants that dotted the geyser field wouldn’t provide much cover. Though the planet was still dark and foggy.
Perax: I can see the runabout. Let’s make sure not to step on any of the geyser spouts.
Lystra: Agreed. I don’t relish the idea of being shot into the air like a Boslic torpedo.
((Timeskip to when they make it back to the runabout))
Once they made it back and were finally able to set Maramox down onto the lone biobed on the shuttle, all Indrid wanted to do was sit down for a few minutes. The muscles in his arms hurt and he bet Leran’s did too. But there was no time for that, Maramox was still out and Indrid needed to make sure that they were okay first.
Maramox’s vital signs were already being displayed on the monitor above the bed. Indrid pulled out a medical tricorder and began scanning the Denobulan. Aside from a few bruises from where the vines had constricted, Indrid couldn’t see anything that would have knocked the doctor out for this long.
oO Blood sample. Oo
He took the sample and used the medical tricorder to analyze it. It identified a sedative in Maramox’s blood.
oO From where the thorns pricked them. Oo
The information the tricorder provided him on the sedative showed that it wouldn’t hurt the medical officer, but they would be asleep for the next several hours.
Indrid reached for his face, pausing as he realized that he was still wearing the helmet of his EV suit. He took it off and finally rubbed his face. Indrid sat with his elbows on his knees and his forehead resting on the heels of his hands for a moment.
oO Maramox is okay, they're okay. But whoever did this is still out there and could be coming for us. And also, no doctor because the doctor is in the biobed. Oo
oO Can’t sit here forever, Indrid… Oo
With a deep breath, he stood up and put his helmet back on to go back outside the runabout.
Perax: here’s your phaser back. I got one out of the crate. ::he showed her the dolphin while handing the Aquila back to her.:: How is the Doc?
Yirah: They were injected with a sedative– must have been on the thorns– they’ll be out for the next several hours but over then that Maramox appears to be okay.
Lystra: That’s good to hear. At least we can keep him secure on the runabout. ::to Leran:: Trade you. Picked them from that tree. Figured you could use more things to study.
Perax: Response
Yirah: We’ll need to tell the other away team what happened.
If they couldn’t get the signal with the Conny cleared up then that would be the next best option.
Lystra: Hey, guys. I found something…strange. I found peanuts…and cashews.
Yirah: Earth natives… how did they get here?
Perax: Response
Lystra: One of the bags I replicated for you must have gotten torn when I was putting them away. ::she gestured to a small cluster of sprouts in a line:: See, and the tricorder registered peanuts and cashews. I think it’s safe to say that those are not native to this world.
Perax: Response
Yirah: We need to make sure that we dig all of them up. Having plants that are not native to this world could result in them becoming invasive species. Especially with how fast they are growing.
Lystra: Agreed, but do they grow that fast normally?
Indrid shook his head hesitantly.
Yirah: I’m not a botanist but I don’t think so…
Perax: Response
Lystra: Same, these have trace amounts of Chrondite in them too. I wonder if this planet could grow anything. ::pause:: According to the tricorder’s database, peanuts and cashews can’t normally be grown together due to their varied growth habits.
Indrid looked out on the dark, geyser marked landscape.
Yirah: I just don't see how it's possible for any Earth plants to grow here at all. The conditions are so different...
Perax: Response
Lystra: A planet that could grow anything, or near abouts would be something incredibly valuable. Valuable enough to protect it from anyone else who might find it. We should definitely be more careful going forward.
Perax: Response
Yirah: We should get a container for the seedlings. We'll be able to have our botanists take a look at them, soil and all. And prevent the non-native plants from spreading.
Lystra/Perax: Response
Since Lystra had a shovel, Indrid just had to find a container that would fit the few centimeters worth of dirt and seedlings. He went back into the runabout to find one, and returned with a box that would work.
Yirah: Found a container for the seedlings.
He set the box on the ground next to the line of cashews and peanuts.
Lystra/Perax: Response
He looked out over the landscape.
Yirah: Do you think that more of them fell out? Just want to avoid having those things multiply out over the planet like a bad tribble infestation.
Lystra/Perax: Response
