So’Mior: The only recorded way to destroy Chrondite in Federation records is with a particle beam.

Of course there was an unending amount of things outside of Federation records and this could certainly be one of them. But what was within Federation records gave them a good basis on the types of things that would have a similar effect.

Shimisi: A particle beam... But that will suggest... that someone did was here before us, if you're theory is right. Maybe... a mining operation from someone else?

So'Mior: Possibly. The planet, from what information our preliminary scans that can penetrate the nebula suggest, is very rich in minerals. Though that may not indicate mining. Mineral rich soil, for example, could be invaluable for cultivating rare and difficult species of flora.

And terraforming for farming could also require some heavy handed changes to the environment.

Shimisi: Are there any instances in wich... the effects of a particle beam could be happening, from natural sources? I mean, this nebula, the strange rogue planet, the mixture of particles from all those strange materials,...

The young Vulcan tipped his head to one side, considering.

So'Mior: It is possible that with the dense composition of the nebula that some sort of energy release could approach the concentration of a particle beam. However natural phenomenon tend to not maintain concentration in one specific area. A buildup of energy that large drastically increases the likelihood that we would have picked up the discharge on long range sensors.  I am running a search through the Federation records for the last several weeks, but thus far I have not found anything.

Again, it was possible, but all signs pointed to unlikely. So’Mior was willing to keep an open mind, but he was also guided by every ‘no’ his research found to discover the remaining path that said ‘yes.’

Shimisi: Maybe if we extend our shields to the maximum of their range, we could be able to make them get readings further. If we increase the range, the radiation should drop on the source of our sensors and tractor beam emitters, that should help, at least a bit, right?

He considered it and tipped his head fractionally.

So'Mior: Your theory is sound, Sir. It has a reasonably probably of being efficacious.

To maintain that mystique of accuracy in all things So’Mior like all of his Vulcan family, couched his answers to always leave room for error.  But he essentially agreed that the plan was a good one.

Shimisi: If I'm not wrong, Gamma radiation comes from the protons after the particle is spliced by whatever it hits the particle. Knowing that,... and since Ba'el on the bridge is working on a way to get a sample, with that sample of the nebula, can we determine its signature and stablish a pattern that we can either filter, or counter with our own resources to cut through the interference it creates?

Once again he considered the question.

So'Mior: With a sample we will be able to discern far more information, yes. There are subatomic markers left by particle splicing which we can use to eliminate energy sources and provide information on likely sources.

Shimisi: ?

So’Mior: There is always the possibility that whatever caused this has not yet been encountered.

Which was a constant risk of space exploration.

Or, depending on who you were, a constant excitement of space exploration.

Shimisi: ?

So’Mior: We can set up containment in this stellar cartography lab, which will fall well above safety standards for that type of sample.

Shimisi: ?

He nodded and started to dive back into his work.

So’Mior: Certainly, Sir. I am going to compile the data we already have against our databases amd prepare to take more scans once we have completed our maneuvers.

Shimisi: ?
