After the Commodore left engineering, he was left with the task of getting the sensors to be able to 'sense' what's around them to help protect the ship and the crew inside of it. So he questioned himself what he can do to improve what he was already doing as technically everything was working properly, so he focused his sight on another way.
Since it was not his field of expertise, he'll need to work with science more closely. Of course they're sharing data and the information they could get but coordinating what needs to be done from both sides will require a more closer, personal interaction so he checked out who's free to be contacted, with Yirah and S'Jenes out, there were others, but not all have fields of expertise related to the problem at hand. Across the list of names there was one he recognized, So'Mior, a Vulcan hybrid that has a general science expertise and since he's an ensign he's sure he'll be eager to get some practical experience in inter-department work, or at least, he hoped he'll be eager.
