Being of a higher rank had some advantages. And some were not that great, like having to sit on the bridge during shore leave, just in case. This “just in case” only happened about 5% of the time, if even this much. Still someone had to man the stations. At least it was simple shifts that allowed some time to read or chat with bridge officers. Every now and then one of them bust out the cards for a game.
The problem with being a Telepath that was very sensitive to surface thoughts was that nobody wanted to play card games with Akeelah. At least not the ones where she could win, which was many of them. Not that she tried to, but people really broadcasted their thoughts out loud.
Leaning back on the center chair she went over the newly arrived officers in Security. It was good to know her people after all, even if she was not the chief. Especially in security they had to trust each other with their lives. Other than that, there wasn’t much going on. Well, other than the buggy race that was transmitted to the bridge screen, so those that had to work with very boring shift didn’t completely miss it.

The day had started like every other day. Capt. Va Remy had begun to find a rhythm in her routine. Review the daily reports. Send out her own reports. Make the rounds. Much of her day to day was always the same and she wouldn’t have it any other way.
Hermes played an important role in the Federation’s communications intelligence (COMINT) and despite the Bajoran’s small stature, she ran a tight ship so to speak. Which was why today had caught her surprisingly off-guard. There had been little to no warning when the first reports had hit- Remy jumping her feet as the klaxons began to sound informing her there was a confirmed threat. She made her way to main command area.
Va: Report!
It didn’t take long for the updates to pile in. Their beta site was under fire.
She was no fool- surely the day had been chosen for this reason. The fleet was gathering for it’s glorious Frontier Day. Would there even be any help for them out there? She had to believe there would be someone… anyone out there.
With a leap of faith, she ordered the crew to send out a distress signal and closed her eyes for a moment, waiting for a response she wasn’t sure would come..

Akeelah had raised her gaze to look at the view screen. The teams seemed to be eager to prove that each of them were the best. The Flight Department had outlined different routes, so the course wouldn’t be too crowded, and each team could decide which scenery to observe. Not a bad idea really. From what she could see, the drivers did not actually pay any attention to the transmitting drones, which was how it should be. The view changed from the desert, to tunnels, to a vast cave and more.
Kapoor: Commander, we are receiving a call, priority one.
D’Sena: On the screen.
The buggy race was pushed aside, and for once nobody complained, as the screen changed to a new scenery.
Remy had been fielding continued updates as she waited- not so patiently- for a response. Finally the screen crackled with an indication that their signal was being answered.
Va: This Captain Va of the Hermes Outpost.
D’Sena: Lieutenant Commander D’Sena of the USS Constitution-B. What can we do for you, Sir?
Remy blinked. The Constitution? She had not expected them to answer the call. Perhaps their luck was changing…
Va: Commander, we request immediate assistance. We are receiving reports of several attacks along the border.
Akeelah rose from the seat, her fully black eyes fixated on the woman on the screen. She nodded to Chandni, who immediately went to retrieve coordinates.
D’Sena: Who are the attackers? How much crew do you have and how many casualties?
After all they needed to prepare and she knew Jalana would ask these questions.
Va: I don’t have confirmation ::she shook her head in frustration:: There have been reports of issues with pirates near the border in the past. Please help us. We are a small outpost, but our work.. ::she trailed off for a moment:: I believe it’s only a matter of time before they target us.
She wasn’t a Vulcan, but it was a logical presumption.
D’Sena: Understood. We are at Drever IV and will make our way to you as quickly as possible.
Va: We will hold them off as long as we can.
Remy turned as she got another alarming report from an officer near her.
Officer: Captain, they are shooting at the Communications rela–
The last thing Akeelah saw was the Captain’s hand come down as if to slam it down but before it reached the destination the screen went blank. She turned to Chandni.
D’Sena: What happened?
Kapoor: We lost contact. The attack must have been on the relay the call went through.
The Rodulan furrowed her brows, but she didn’t say anything, even though inwardly she was cussing. Outwardly she wouldn’t, not on duty. Hermes was an important installation. They monitored deep space and relaxed information, calls and communication throughout the sector to other HUBs. Captain Va had mentioned attacks near the border recently and now their relay had been attacked.
There was only one course of action. Immediately she opened a channel that would be transmitted around the ship but also to the teams on the surface, doing the Buggy race and audience. Since the CO was on the planet, she’d have to be bossy and bring everyone back.
D’Sena: =/\= Bridge to all Personnel. This is an immediate recall. Return to the ship and find your way to your stations to prepare for departure. I repeat this is an immediate recall. =/\=
