((A Geyser Valley, Northern Hemisphere, Peekaboo))
Lystra: I understood that reference! My people borrow everything from all cultures, so I’ve dived into the ship’s database about Earth culture more than a few times. Their literature is as fun as it is…odd. Sometimes.
Yirah: I did once try a holo-novel based on what I was told was originally an Earth book.
Lystra: Ooh, which one? What was it about?
She asked earnestly while she kept a wary eye out. The nice thing about how dark this place was, was the light from the torch on her rifle shined a long distance.
Yirah: It took place in 19th century England. During that time marrying someone with monetary wealth was very important. So this mom is trying to get her daughters wealthy husbands but it's made even more difficult with the zombie outbreak.
Lystra: Zombies are a weird concept.
Perax: ::he whinced slightly:: I’ve never been fond of the horror genre. I prefer suspense, though I found a couple authors that could successfully sit on the edge of the two genres.
Yirah: Interesting that we haven't scared the bird. Maybe it's used to larger creatures, or we don't remind it of any predators that it may have.
Lystra: Hmm, true. Could it be that it’s used to bipedal creatures because of whomever else is on this planet with us?
Perax: It’s possible that it is used to another bipedal species, but it’s more likely that it simply has no reason to fear us.
Yirah: response
Lystra: I hope that it’s not a carrion eater and thinks Maramox is dead. Should we risk trying to move with it sitting on him like that?
Yirah: response
Perax: Well, he hasn’t moved so far. We might be able to risk moving them both further.
Lystra: I could fire a few shots in the air to try and scare it away, but who knows if that’ll work or incite it to bite one of you. ::she looked closer and shook her head:: That thing’s got a lot of teeth and ::she shined the torch on it, which made the eye stalks look her way:: I think there’s venom in those fangs. Or it just drools, but it looks like those teeth have something dripping out of them.
Perax: ::he pulled out his tricorder while balancing Maramox’s legs in one hand extremely briefly:: the bird is strange. ::he glanced at the readings:: the nervous system is unique to say the least. The feathers seem to contain chrondite, and the drool is Lysozyme, which the tricorder claims is a natural animal produced antibiotic. ::he put up the tricorder and took Maramox’s legs in his hands again::
Yirah: response
Lystra: Like you said, this place is weird. Do you two think you can walk with its extra weight? The longer we stand here the heavier he’s gonna get.
For Lystra’s part she did her best to talk while keeping her eyes and rifle pointed towards the ridgeline while looking for threats. If the bird wasn’t a threat then this might be an opportunity to scan another lifeform once they got back to the runabout.
Perax: A more detailed scan can be done later. We need to keep moving. I don’t like the idea of whoever attacked us finding us again while we are weighed down. Somehow I don’t think they have stopped watching us.
For her part the Boslic nodded and followed Leran’s gaze when he looked around, noting the tree. Lystra walked over and plucked a couple of the fruit on it for analysis back at the runabout. She noted how even the tree seemed to contain some sort of bioluminescence as it shimmered when each fruit was removed.
Yirah: response
Lystra: Agreed. ::she tucked the fruit into her pack:: Best to assume with our lights that they know precisely where we are. Especially since the runabout isn’t easy to conceal.
The sound of rushing water filled the audio receptors of her suit helmet and she walked a few paces ahead of the other two, rifle against her chest but slightly lowered and her focus alert. More than a few times the bright lights of her suit and rifle’s torch illuminated the ridgeline.
Perax: I can see the runabout. Let’s make sure not to step on any of the geyser spouts.
Yirah: response
Lystra: Agreed. I don’t relish the idea of being shot into the air like a Boslic torpedo.
She guided them around the geysers which thankfully only burst after they’d passed. Eventually they reached the Little Crow and as the others secured the doctor in the medbay she made a perimeter check.
As she was inspecting one of the sensors Leran approached her with her phaser held out for her to take.
Perax: here’s your phaser back. I got one out of the crate. ::he showed her the dolphin while handing the Aquila back to her.:: How is the Doc?
She took the Aquila and holstered it on her thigh again. In exchange she held out the two star shaped fruits she’s picked from that tree out for Leran.
Yirah: response
Lystra: That’s good to hear. At least we can keep him secure on the runabout. ::to Leran:: Trade you. Picked them from that tree. Figured you could use more things to study.
Perax/Yirah: Response
She moved back over to the nearest sensor to inspect it and could see, something, growing on and around it. She crouched low and blinked at the thin stalks of green growing out and around the device. Using her tricorder she scanned it and the results prompted her to call for the scientists.
Lystra: Hey, guys. I found something…strange. I found peanuts…and cashews.
Still crouched she rummaged through the pack she carried with her and removed each of the packages of trail mix until one emerged with a handful of raisins and nutty assortments. The bag had been ripped open.
Perax/Yirah: Response
Lystra: One of the bags I replicated for you must have gotten torn when I was putting them away. ::she gestured to a small cluster of sprouts in a line:: See, and the tricorder registered peanuts and cashews. I think it’s safe to say that those are not native to this world.
Perax/Yirah: Response
Lystra: Agreed, but do they grow that fast normally?
The Boslic narrowed the scan of her tricorder by a few microns and held it over the sprouts for a few moments.
Perax/Yirah: Response
She studied her tricorder for a moment.
Lystra: Same, these have trace amounts of Chrondite in them too. I wonder if this planet could grow anything. ::pause:: According to the tricorder’s database, peanuts and cashews can’t normally be grown together due to their varied growth habits.
Perax/Yirah: Response
Lystra: A planet that could grow anything, or near abouts would be something incredibly valuable. Valuable enough to protect it from anyone else who might find it. We should definitely be more careful going forward.
Perax/Yirah: Response
