Indrid spun around in his swivel chair.

Click. Click. Click.  In his left hand was a fidget toy, the individual segments of the toy clicking against each other as he manipulated it through his fingers.

oO Come on Indrid. You can do it! There's only a little bit left. Oo

Click. Click. Click.

His swivel chair slowed to a stop in front of the screen of the desk computer.

oO You can't do anything else until you've gotten this report done. Oo

He stared at the screen.

Click. Click. Click.

And stared at it some more.

Click. Click. Click.

Reached his hand out and--

-- pushed off the desk for another spin.

oO Okay. Okay. Okay. Umm... How about, once you're done with the report you can go get one of those uttaberry tarts that they make at the Brew Continuum? Could just go get one anyway-- No! You have to finish the reports! Oo

S’Jenes: =/\= Ensign S’Jenes to Lieutenant Yirah. =/\=

Indrid put a foot down to stop the chair.

Click. Click. Click.

His head turned to the screen, the report still there. Still unfinished.

oO Well of course it's unfinished, Indrid! You want to know why? Because you haven't finished it! Oo

Click. Click. Click.

Indrid reached up and tapped his comm.

Yirah: =/\= Go ahead, S'Jenes. =/\=

S’Jenes tone was professional.

S’Jenes: =/\= Lieutenant, I have discovered an item aboard the runabout that was not logged prior to departure. Given the upcoming shore leave transfer to Tucker Station, I believed it prudent to request your evaluation before we stand down. =/\=

oO Not logged? Wouldn't that be a problem for the Ops department? But S'Jenes requested an evaluation and he would know to hand it over to Ops under normal circumstances so that they could put it where it needs to go. Oo

Which meant that this was not a normal circumstance. Indrid craved more information and wanted to ask a bunch of questions about it right then and there but there was only so much information one could gain over comms and there was a much simpler way of getting the information.

Yirah: =/\= Bring the item to my office. =/\=

S’Jenes: =/\= Acknowledged. Thank you, Lieutenant. =/\=

As the comm line closed Indrid twisted his chair to stare once again at the report.

oO Well, a little break never hurt anybody. And since S'Jenes is bringing an item, I'm at least still working. Oo

As he waited for S'Jenes to arrive, Indrid got out a diagnostic tray for whatever it was S'Jenes was bringing.

The door chimed.

Yirah: Come in.

The door opened a moment later and S'Jenes entered.

Many people found Indrid's office to be disconcerting. More specifically, they found his choice in office decor disconcerting.

People walking through The Saloon didn't give the animal skulls and weapons that line the walls much of a second glance.

It made the place 'rustic' and 'atmospheric.'

But Indrid had seen people almost jump out of their skin when they saw the display of hand axes, and humanoid skulls from the evolutionary ancestors of various Federation species that lined the walls. Little plaques stated which each one was.

Apparently it made his office 'a little creepy' (to some people anyway).

Indrid didn't know why, they were just as replicated as those in The Saloon. Either way, it didn't seem to bother the Vulcan as he strode into the room.

Yirah: S'Jenes.

Indrid stood next to the diagnostic tray on his desk.

S’Jenes: Lieutenant.

As S’Jenes opened his hand, Indrid tilted his head to get a better look at the item.

oO A cut gemstone? Oo

He took note of the visible lattice.

S’Jenes: This was located just inside the runabout hatch upon our return. It was not present during pre-flight inspection.

S’Jenes placed the crystal on the diagnostic tray. Indrid took out his tricorder to scan the crystal. What stood out to him was that the inclusions within the crystal were uniformly spaced.

Yirah: Well, based on what I'm seeing so far it looks lab-made to me.

Indrid focused on his tricorder readout.

S’Jenes: I cannot account for how it came aboard, Lieutenant, but the complexity of the lattices suggests that it was planted there. I wished to consult with you and get your opinion on it.

Yirah: If it had been one of our crew-- whether they brought it with them as a trinket or brought it back from the planet-- it would have come up in the logs. And since you say that it wasn't...

He paused. His head tilted to the side, the corners of his lips in a slight frown.

Yirah: It might have been left by the Kameryans.

S’Jenes inclined his head slightly in a manner Indrid interpreted as agreement.

S’Jenes: That was my concern.

Yirah: Right. And so you brought it to me.

S’Jenes: Yes, Lieutenant.

It still felt weird, being the one that others reported to. He felt like he didn't know what he was doing most of the time, let alone being equipped to tell other people what to do. And yet, of all the qualified people on the ship Jalana and Diz'mim had asked him to be Assistant Chief Science Officer and Second Officer so he guessed he must be doing something right.

Yirah: Well, if it is a piece of Kameryan technology— which seems the most likely to me given the circumstances— then is this a case of them simply losing the crystal or is it something cultural? For instance, is it some sort of gift, or perhaps a test to see if we return it?

He frowned and briefly looked at the ground.

Yirah: Given our last misunderstanding resulted in people dying we need to be sure.

S’Jenes: response

Indrid looked back down at the crystal.

Yirah: Couldn’t say. Some sort of holo-emitter maybe, but then, how does one activate it? It doesn’t appear to have its own power source.

S’Jenes: response

Yirah: We should have engineering take a look at it. Hopefully they’ll have a better idea of what it’s for.

S’Jenes: response
