(( Thoth's Walking Tree Farm, Paoike, Drever IV))

Stapledon:  Sir, I know it's not my field but it might be a good idea to look for any strange viral mutations.

Shimisi:  Yes, I'm sure that will be looked upon, log it. If it's a mutation, our science team will find what's wrong or if it's a result of the colony interaction with the environment.

Thoth: If that is the case then surely there is something that we could change.

Shimisi:  Until we know the cause, we can't speculate with the solution.

Stapledon: Okay cool. In the meantime perhaps we should take a look at those power lines. Are they above ground or below?

Thoth: Below ground.

Stapledon: I see. It usually isn't a problem either way, but who knows, right?

Shimisi: Without being a terraformer or a science type, an underground line will be better in terms of protection of the lines and aesthetically, not to mention not interfering with the local wildlife, or at least in a lesser way.

Thoth: Perhaps. I, of course, am always looking out for the wildlife.

Shimisi: :: smiling :: Just what I thought I'll do if I designed this place.

Thoth grinned back at Shimisi and moved towards the direction of the solar panel grid.

(( Solar grid - Paoike Colony - Drever IV ))

The grid was a few minutes away from Thoth's own home. It was a large area that received plenty of sunlight to power the homes.

Shimisi: So, this is it?

Thoth: Indeed it is, my five-eyed friend.

Shimisi: Ok, we'll check everything, from the receptors to the transmission lines. I'm particularly interested in checking the inverters for any leak in the energy conversion or in the storage.

Stapledon: Response

Shimisi: Yes, that too. When we're finished we could follow the energy lines to find any problem with them and map the distribution along the colony. Mr. Thoth, in your studies, have you found anything abnormal that could lead to the origin of those problems? Or if there's been any abnormal behavior of the fauna that could indicate the problem? I've known that animals tend to have an instinct for problems.

Thoth: Hmm... :: he scratched his chin in contemplation. :: As the plants have died off the animals have moved further away from the colony. But that is to be expected as animals follow the food source.

Shimisi: Have any of the animals shown any illness or health issues that could be related to the plants problems?

Thoth: No. Not that I have seen, not yet at least. I believe the main issue right now will be if their food supplies start to run low.

That was particularly true for animals housed within the colony, including his precious walking trees.

Stapledon: Response

Thoth let them go about their work. Occasionally looking over to see how things were going, but seeing as he wasn't well versed in mechanics he mostly stayed out of their way. Enjoying the sunshine and searching for any critters that have made their way to the solar grid area.

Shimisi: You know what I like about machines?

Stapledon: Response

Shimisi: They're simple. Even the most sophisticated machine follows logic and the principle of action reaction.

Stapledon: Response

Shimisi: For the moment I see no problem here. The collection panels are in order, the energy received is converted properly and the storage unit doesn't show any leak or radiation. What about the energy lines and the transfer program?

Stapledon: Response

Thoth: You think that the lines themselves could be leaking?

Shimisi: Once we clear this, we must follow the lines to the housing and installations. Sir, you know any particular installation of housing that we should be specially careful while investigating it? In case, for example, you have some animals for study?

Scratched his chin.

Thoth: Aside from my walking trees?

Shimisi/Stapledon: response

Thoth laughed.

Thoth: No, they shouldn't give you any trouble. :: he smiled, a mischievous glint in his eye :: It is the people that you need to watch out for. :: he joked ::

Shimisi/Stapledon: response
