((Secondary Holodeck 2, Deck 10, USS Constitution-B))

He wandered around the rock circle and looked at the fallen pattern of the rocks. He separated himself from the others as a thought suddenly struck him.

oO nobody has reported the creature to the command officers yet Oo

Perax: =/\= Ensign Perax to Lieutenant Commander Ch’Nilmani, I have an update on the status of the artifact. =/\=

Ch’Nilmani: =/\= response =/\=

Perax: =/\= Our team has reconvened to Secondary Holodeck 2. We have successfully contacted a sentient creature, what we believed to be an artifact. =/\=

Ch’Nilmani: =/\= response =/\=

Perax: =/\= The creature appears to be scared and homesick, not hostile. We are attempting to calm it by running a simulation of Vryshaan. The de-aging action is a defense mechanism to bring us back to an age before we would be a threat. =/\=

Ch’Nilmani: =/\= response =/\=

Perax: =/\= No, Sir, we don’t have a way of reversing the effect yet =/\=

Ch’Nilmani: =/\= response =/\=

Perax: =/\= Yes, Sir, Perax out.=/\=

((OOC: I don’t mind extending the conversation longer if you want to))

Perax didn’t return to the group immediately after closing the comm channel with First Officer Ch’Nilmani. He walked along the worn smooth knee high stone wall until he felt like he had enough space to think, then he sat down on the wall and faced away from the group.

The grayish green grass rippled in the wind and there were scrub like trees with some fruit dotting the grassland and a small grove of tall trees on a far grassy hill. A few wildflowers broke up the monotony of the seemingly endless grassland hills.

oO it’s beautiful, but not very exciting. You get the sense nothing really happens here. I wish we had arrived when the civilization was still alive. That might have been worth telling the Symbiosis Commission about. Oo

He immediately felt a little guilty. After all this was a first contact situation, but it was also a first contact where he felt useless.

oO What good is it to be contacting a newly discovered species when communicating is only done through someone else. Oo

Perax sighed. He had defied his parents’ wishes, and joined Starfleet, and had to face things, like weapons training, that made him uncomfortable during the Academy. His first mission,  discovering a sentient rock that he couldn’t actually talk to or learn from directly, he just couldn’t imagine interesting a bureaucrat back home on Trill.

After a few more moments of silence and thinking how unfair the universe was. He got back up and began walking back toward the group.

By the time Perax returned to the rest of the group they had mostly worked out the logistics for answering questions from the creature.

Kvash: I still am not entirely comfortable calling it it when we don't know what it wants to be called, but...

D'Sena: As said it does not have gender, why would you feel uncomfortable with that?

Perax had nothing to say on the subject. The topic was occasionally a touchy one with many species and people groups, including Trills, especially some joined Trills. He preferred simply to avoid the issue as much as possible.

Applegate: Response

Kvash: Are you getting anything, D'Sena?

D'Sena: I am getting a lot of emotions from you all, and talking about what this creature may want instead of listening to the person who is currently connected to it. It is overwhelmed with the knowledge that what it did to our people was in a sense harmful. So let us focus on fixing this before we badger it with requests, shall we?

It seemed reasonable to him. If the creature was willing to undo the damage it caused to the crew without preamble, why bother asking and answering questions right now? The only reasonable question that should be asked is how to reverse the de-aging process. Externally, he simply nodded his agreement.

Applegate/Kvash: Response

D'Sena: As much as I understand the science curiosity, we will be able to ask and answer questions afterwards. How Doctor Applegate, if you allow me to dip into your emotions and thoughts of regret towards this creature I will be able to project them to it, showing that you meant no harm.

Out of the corner of his eye, Perax saw Tejan take a step back as if she were avoiding the possibility of telepathic contact. oO She’s a coward. Oo the thought passed through his mind with only the slightest edge of judgment, despite the fact he still didn’t trust Tejan or like her.

Applegate/Kvash: Response

As D’Sena motioned Applegate toward her, Perax edged closer to Tejan.

D'Sena: While physical contact is not necessary it will make it easier to focus on your thoughts and emotions for the projection. Please stand or sit in a comfortable position to not offer a distraction. Then focus on your regret and your apology and I will translate for the creature.

Applegate/Kvash: Response

Perax: ::whispering:: Why are you backing up? You have the opportunity of a lifetime.

Tejan: response

Perax: ::still whispering:: If you put down in your report that the Starfleet crew was willing to make contact with a new species and the Cardassian delegate present was not, will your superiors be happy that your report does not show the populist notion of Cardassian superiority during the contact?

He thought his voice, quiet and calm, might be more unnerving to Tejan than another shouting match. oO And the advice makes sense, though I have no idea why I’m giving her good advice. Oo

Tejan: response

Perax: ::shrugging:: suit yourself. Think how long it has been since the last silicon based life form was discovered ((the last he knew of was the Kessok shortly after the Dominion War)). You might not ever get another chance to write such a report. ::he turned back to watch D’Sena and Applegate::

Applegate/Tejan/D’Sena/Kvash: Response
