to UFOP: StarBase 118 - USS Constitution-B

((Main Engineering, Deck 5, USS Icarus))

Managing power on the USS Icarus was proving to be quite the undertaking. The systems were specifically designed to draw power to the hyperwarp drive and trying to circumvent that was becoming an increasingly difficult task.

Aurdax: Will do.  This isn’t an infinite resource – as we burn systems out the system will lock those options off and we won’t be able to shunt further spikes to them. But it’s safer for now to just burn anything we’re not using.

Shimisi: Then we can also use others like the food dispensers or crew quarters life support. If the plan is to bring them to the Aleek-Om, they won't need them.

Nobody would be on the ship for the ride home.  She hoped they could save the Icarus. It would be a fascinating museum piece… though she was hoping it wouldn’t reignite the call for more hyperwarp experimentation.

Her experiences here had put into perspective how dangerous hyperwarp was.

Perax: Using the Capacitors might slow down the number of systems we burn through.

Shimisi: Seems that out people are starting their task.

Perax: Good, the faster we get this done the easier it will be to get the ship under power, slip away from the Sheliak, and get back to base.

Aurdax: Alright, I’m shunting power to the non-critical systems, and trying to keep everything below 30%.

She was trying not to think of the Sheliak. Her brother called them ‘horrible silicone monsters’ and her brother was brave.  She believed him.

Shimisi: Hey, what's this?

Perax: ::he was shaken out of his thoughts.:: What’s what?

Aurdax: Power spike.

She pointed the younger engineer to the readouts that the older one was monitoring.

Shimisi: I'm detecting activity on the EPS node twelve beta,... that's on the front starboard.

Perax: Front starboard. ::he traced the energy lines on his own console.:: That’s where the, oh no. That’s the Icarus’ main deflector control room.

Aurdax: I can’t stop the power flow!  We didn’t route it there and it’s fighting me.

Her fingers flew over the consol buttons, desperately trying everything she could think of, each test coming back without a positive result.

Shimisi: if it's not isolated we need to divert energy from there... Wait... I'm reading energy build up,... 39%... 41%, no, how's that happening?

Perax: It’s like Jurassic Park, but instead of trying to keep things running, we’re trying to keep them powered down to avoid catastrophe.

Aurdax: What Park?

She wondered if that was a reference she should know, if knowing it would help her shut things down. But still, despite every new thing she tried the power readings kept climbing.

Shimisi: I'm getting readings from deck two, wasn't that supposed to be offline??

Perax: Somebody must have reconnected and powered up the main deflector control station. Which is not good to say the least.

Aurdax: Could it be the Sheliak?

They had been warned that the creatures were on this ship.

Shimisi: Anyway, it's getting energy into the deflector and I'm reading a powerup of the hyperwarp... Doctor…

Aurdax: I’m doing everything possible to shut it down, but it looks like I can only6 slow it down.

She grit her teeth, feeling the stress rise to the point where her eye ridges throbbed. She didn’t like this.

Shimisi: =/\= Shimisi to Foster, we have a problem =/\=

Foster: =/\= What kind of problem? =/\=

Shimisi: =/\= Something has activated the hyperwarp drive. We're trying to contain it, but you need to speed up the process. We might have issues sending you additional power, so don't count on it fully =/\=

Foster: =/\= So we have to get as many as possible as fast as possible before we all end up stuck in another subspace rift.=/\=

Aurdax: =/\= Or more likely the whole ship blows up. =/\=

The old doctor muttered something that sounded like ‘Great.’ Before calling out for someone named Lystra.

Perax: =/\= I can slow down the hyperwarp startup by bleeding its power to the empty phaser banks. It will cause arcing along the empty ports where the main phasers should be. I might even be able to fire a couple auxiliary phasers. Ultimately discharging the energy in those systems will burn them out, but it will keep the hyperdrive from finalizing its startup for a little while longer. =/\=

Aurdax: I can help with that process.

Shimisi: ?

Perax: ::he turned to Aurdax:: I won’t be able to help regulate the power supply to the transporter system using the phaser capacitors if those systems are keeping the drive from coming to full power.

Aurdax: Just tell me where you’re focused and I’ll help keep things shut down.

Shimisi: ?

Servi and Perax worked together in quiet focus for a minute or two, buying sickbay all the time they were able to buy.

And, finally, the voice from sickbay returned.

Foster: =/\= Alright we have a working theory that we can release the safeties on the Icarus’ emergency medical transporter, lock on to every remaining crew, transfer the pattern locks to the Aleek-Om and use the power from the Aleek-Om to initiate the transport of everyone at once into the cargo bay.

Shimisi: ?

Foster: =/\= If you can give me two minutes I can confirm we got everyone – but we’re also going to need enough time to get our own butts off this ship. =/\=

Shimisi: ?

Perax: Now, I have to think of a more permanent solution before the phasers burn out.

She looked up at Leran sadly.

Aurdax: I don’t think there is a more permanent solution.  I think we buy the time we can, and then we have to watch it burn.

Beyond historical curiosity there was nothing left to save of the USS Icarus.  She hated to admit that. If she could preserve it, she would.

But also, having been here, seeing what the crew went through, it made the dangers of hyperwarp real in a way that her fanciful mind had only dreamt of previously. She had always been fascinated by it, but now she was also repelled by it.

The very real threat of a warp core breach only added to her ill feelings about it.

Shimisi/Perax: ?

Foster: =/\= Ok, we got them – all of them. S’jenes is over on the Aleek-Om spearheading the evacuation. Get everyone ready for beam out. =/\=

Shimisi/Perax: ?

Aurdax: We should do whatever we can to delay the breach to give the Aleek-Om time to get out of the shockwave radius.

Shimisi/Perax: ?
