(( USS Constitution-B, Bridge ))
The bridge crew looked busy, though she knew they weren’t that busy.
Most of it was routine now that they were back on the way. After the
last events Starfleet had given them easy assignments. A couple of
errand flights such as escorting someone or retrieving something and
now they had to make deliveries of equipment and medical supplies to
Pelleus. When calculating the flight path to the planet they had
noticed that flying the recommended path would take them several
days. However if they took a straight path through the Rigar Nebula
it would cut that time in half.
Jalana leaned back in her big center chair, green eyes casting on
the green. She still was getting used to the way things looked a bit
different now that she had her artificial eye. The way it looked
just a little bit off, not only for her but for others too, made it
clear it was a prosthetic but she liked it that way. Every now and
then she looked around the bridge, zooming in or scanning something
to get used to the way the mechanics worked.
But now she had her gaze resting on the nebula that had expanded on
the front screen as the ship entered into the soup of gasses and
dust particles. The colours varied from purple, blue, pinks to
brighter less defined shades. Reaction between the elements and the
debris and dust that had formed this mass in the way of their path.
Rajel: Scanners?
T’Seva: Response
Jalana nodded, just as she had expected. About 90% of the nebulae
she had been inside in her lifetimes were disturbing the sensors so
much that they couldn’t see anything unless they looked out of a
window and this wasn’t better. The further they went inside, the
more interference they got on the viewscreen, the disturbances just
increasing so they only knew that the nebula was out there because
they were flying right into it.
Rajel: You heard it, you’ll have to fly manually.
T’Aven: Understood, Sir. Switching to manual controls.
Rajel: Indrid, use what little sensors we have to collect data about
the nebula. Barely anyone has been down here far enough to get any
information.
Yirah: Response
The Trill leaned back in the seat and formed a triangle with her
fingers tapping the index fingers against her chin. After another
moment of enduring the horrible visual noise on the screen she
tapped her badge.
Rajel: =/\= Bridge to Engineering. I need you to try to improve our
sensors. I know it’s difficult but I need to be able to see where we
are flying. =/\=
Mingxing: =/\= Response =/\=
As the line closed the Commodore stood up from her seat. Not because
something was wrong. But she didn’t like sitting around without
something to do. These errand flights were not really the most
exciting part of Starfleet and it was the third in a row. So she
stretched her back and looked over at her crew. Even with something
as boring as this they still did their work dutifully and without
complaining. Not every day could be exciting and they all knew
that.
Just as she thought that the proximity alarm on the helm turned on
she whipped around, seeing the Vulcan in the pilot seat scrambling
to try to find out what was happening. While she didn’t know what it
was she figured that continuing to fly may be a bad idea.
Rajel: Full stop.
T’Aven: Engines disengaged.
Rajel: Can you make out anything on the screen?
Anyone on the bridge: Response
It was difficult to see, but in between all the visual noise and
interference - that really made Jalana wish they had a plain window
to the front - was something right before them that looked different
from before. There was still a nebula but it looked.. Solid? And the
twinkle of stars that had been scattered through the nebula or
beyond it shining through was gone.
Rajel: Anyone got an idea what we’re seeing?
Anyone on the bridge: Response
A planet. A planet?? She whirled around to look at who had said
that.
Rajel: What? There wasn’t anything mentioned on the charts when we
prepared the flight path. ::She turned to the screen again.:: Can
you scan it?
Anyone on the bridge: Response
Of course, it would have been too night to be able to. After a
moment she pressed her badge.
Rajel: =/\= Rajel to Diz’mim. Come to the bridge, we found a...
surprise. =/\=
Ch'Nilmani: =/\= Response =/\=
Rajel: T’Aven pull us back a bit, maybe we can see it better then.
The Vulcan did as she was told, reversing and slowly moving
backwards. It only took a moment before Diz came from his office and
Jalana peeked over him, waving him closer and gesturing with her
head towards the badly transmitting view screen.
Rajel: It takes a moment to see, but have a look.
Ch'Nilmani: Response
As the ship still backed off a bit it did not really help with the
interference, but in the few moments that they had a view it looked
like they were near a sphere in the middle of the nebula. It didn’t
look metallic or tech, so the idea that had been posed before that
it was a planet, albeit a small one, was more and more likely.
Rajel: What do you think, Dizzy. Do we have time to check it out?
::She grinned cheekily::
