D'Sena: ::calmly:: I'm already on it, while you are talking about
the rise and fall of civilizations.
Sidney thought about it. Had she really gotten that philosophical?
Yeah, she did. It wasn't surprising since she used to have these
discussions with her team while they spent hours in the dirt
clearing the Vryshaan ruins.
Kvash: What? We're all that kind of scientist.
Perax: Technically, I’m an engineer. ::he muttered, not sure if
she was being serious or not::
Applegate: That is a science. Yes?
D'Sena: It seems to try to find out where we are. That it is not
real delays things.
Kvash: I wonder if it...I bet it has a magnetic sense.
Perax: Since its body is stone and metal, that’s a very real
possibility.
Yeah. This conversation was starting to get out of her depth
again. Right now, the doctor was just tired and the holodeck was
making her miss the work on Vryshaan. When D'Sena raised her hand,
Sidney quieted. This was the important part, to see if this entire
idea of the holodeck was going to work. Doctor Applegate was
confident with the idea but her gut still twisted with anxiety.
What if it didn't?
D'Sena: It is calming.
Sidney let out a sigh of relief.
Kvash: Good. After this we should likely return it to its home for
real. But see what you can find out from it.
Perax: Agreed.
Applegate: I honestly can't believe that actually worked.
Now...can it help us and the crew affected?
Akeelah gave a nod and began to concentrate again. Nothing was
really happening on the outside except the intensity of the
situation. The Rodulan appeared to be in deep concentration.
Sidney had no idea how much effort telepathy took, especially in
situations like this.
D'Sena: Small animals... Without claws or teeth. Cuddly and ...
cute. ::She spoke quietly:: The loss of fear, safety.
Kvash: :: trying not to laugh :: You mean...
Perax: ::he looked bewildered at the Klingon:: huh?
Applegate: Are you alright?
D'Sena: Based on what I had sensed before and now, I believe that
it was terrified to be removed from its home. And when it was it
was scared, remembering that small animals are not scary, they are
harmless. So .. ::She looked up to the others with a slightly
surprised expression on her usually stoic face.:: it turned the
large 'animals' that took it from home, into small animals that
are more harmless.
Tejan: So it really was a defense mechanism? ::She sounded
genuinely surprised::
Kvash: It made everyone cute!
Perax: More like it tried to declaw or defang us.
Applegate: Ohhhh.
D'Sena: If we can assure it that our ... big animals are not going
to harm it, we may be able to convince it to turn them back.
Kvash: If I was it, I would also appreciate something else.
Kvash turned to Sidney and the doctor gave her the Vulcan raised
eyebrow. She had no idea what the Klingon was trying to say.
Applegate: What?
Kvash: I think you, Doctor, owe it an apology. D'Sena, does it
have a sense of gender?
Really? She was supposed to apologize to a rock that she had no
clue had sentience? Why did it take so damn long to show itself
then? The doctor was of the opinion this was the rock's fault more
than hers.
D'Sena: response
Perax: ::nodding:: It probably would be a good idea to apologize,
even if we didn’t know.
D'Sena: response
Kvash: I don't feel comfortable calling a sentient being "it"
unless it really doesn't have one.
Applegate: Really? You're asking me to apologize to a hunk of
rock.
D'Sena: response
Kvash: And I have lots of questions I would love to ask...but if
we're going to gain trust, we shouldn't be the ones *asking*.
Perax: Trust is gained by offering information and following
through on statements and promises.
This. This was why she only wanted to work with artifacts. Doctor
Applegate hated all this interpersonal relationship stuff. Trust
and so forth. She didn't have to worry about all that when she was
just sitting among the ruins taking pictures and sketching
artifact positions.
D'Sena: response
Kvash: Meaning it's time to invite our friend here to ask
questions of *us*.
Applegate: Can it communicate like that, D'Sena?
D'Sena: response

Applegate: I'm not a telepath so I'm just guessing here but it
sounds like you're only getting impressions from it. Can it convey
more complex ideas?

Applegate: I'm just trying to understand what it would want to
know about us outside of us being hostile or not.

Applegate: We could do something simple and ask it what it's most
curious about.

OOC: I didn't want to push this too far as some have a lot of
tags to catch up with and I didn't want them swamped. Applegate
isn't arguing with the situation, she's just confused as this
isn't her lane. Plus I didn't want to put words in D'Sena's
mouth about how the sentient artifact was speaking to her.
