(( Solar grid - Paoike Colony - Drever IV ))

The two Starfleet engineers looked down at their tricorders as they walked, following the underground lines of the solar grid back towards the town. They hadn't gotten very far when the devices alerted them to something.

Thoth looked over at them with interest wondering what they had found.

Stapledon:  Interesting.  It sounds like there are automatic defensive weapons along the edges of the colony.  Tranquilizer darts?

Shimisi: :: Looking at his own PADD :: It seems so. Good that we've been alerted about it.

Thoth: Ah, yes. My perimeter.

oO I guess Bolen informed them after all. Good that he remembered. Oo

Stapledon: Has there been some kind of security problem?

Thoth: In a manner of speaking. When interacting with new wildlife there are oftentimes mistakes in understanding.

He didn't blame the wildlife for what had happened nor did he blame the colonists. Most people didn't spend their lives studying animal behavior nor did the animals expect such sudden change that had been brought by the colony.

Thoth: There have been problems in the past of wildlife getting into the colony and harming people or destroying equipment. Bolen, the colony founder, hired me several years ago to put a stop to it.

Stapledon:  Hm...

As they continued on Kim kept checking her tricorder. A roaring sound could be heard in the distance. It was loud and easily carried with a distinct lilt.

Stapledon:  What was that?

Shimisi: Another wildlife specimen?

Thoth: An ash spotted mek'leth tooth. ::he tilted his head:: Or perhaps a long tailed mek'leth tooth? Hmm...

Shimisi: Does your tricorder picked up anything unusual?

Thoth focused on the sound, waiting for another roar. It was louder and deeper than the last one.

oO Filled with pride. Oo

Stapledon: I'm getting methane traces nearby.

Shimisi: Methane... Could this be a byproduct of local wildlife?

Thoth: Not the mek'leth tooths. ::he turned to the engineers:: There are different varieties. I haven't yet figured out whether or not they are better classified as subspecies or distinct species; I need to do more research on their DNA. But you can tell the difference between them based on the sound of their roar. It is quite powerful don't you think?

He smiled at them but the two seemed more interested in the methane than his thoughts on the local fauna.

Shimisi: Any sign of those water currents? Did they match the methane readings?

Kim shook her head just as another roar emanated.

Thoth: Well, it definit;y sounds similar to mek'leth tooth but I don't recognize that particular roar. How strange...

He felt the ground shake, the vibration running up his legs.

Stapledon: What the hell??

Thoth reached out, placing a hand on Kim's shoulder to steady her.

Thoth: Perhaps it's a new species!

Even though he lived in a colony world that had many undocumented species, it never failed to excite him to find a new one. The best part was that these engineers would get to share in his excitement.

oO Maybe once the fear has worn off. Oo He decided, seeing that Kim seemed unnerved.

Shimisi: Response?

The roaring grew more intense and Kim turned, Thoth followed her gaze towards the forest. Something large was moving within. Several smaller animals had fled and ran past them as the animal picked its way through the dense mass of trees. Another loud thump as the creature approached, shaking everything in its vicinity.

Thoth slowly moved forwards, his hand hovering near his sheathed mek'leth, that is the blade, not the animal that he named after it. He gestured for the engineers to stay behind him, there was always risk when encountering a new species.

Shimisi: Response?

Thoth tilted his head, realizing that the engineers weren't too keen on going to check whatever was causing the ground to shake.

Thoth: The vonwI' 'uD'a' should be able to stop it from entering the village.

Shimisi/Stapledon:  Response?

Looking back towards the forest.

Thoth: It keeps out most.

Shimisi/Stapledon:  Response?
