As everyone got up to leave, Shedet remained in her seat knowing the First Officer had requested her to stay. She laid her hands in her lap and tried to be as inconspicuous as possible.

Davis: Commander, I– Saveron, may I speak to you? It’s urgent.

Saveron: ?

Shedet turned away and picked up her PADD to tune out Davis. It sounded private so she wouldn't listen in.

Though Shedet worked hard to not listen, she tuned in to Taurik who was speaking.

Taurik: Lieutenant Taurik, HCO. I am not surprised we have not met, Lieutenant. I only just arrived yesterday.

Horne: Nice to meet you.  Sorry to cut small talk short but I'm not very good at it anyway to be honest.  Lystra and Taurik this is more your world than mine.  What kind of devices can you recommend?

Taurik:  I believe our priority ought to be finding a suitable Universal Translator device. I doubt most of the crew is fluent in the majority of languages spoken in Orion space.

Shedet grinned. oO I am. Oo

Lystra: Not entirely sure yet since we haven’t discussed with the Commander yet about what we’ll need. But ultimately we need things that are not Starfleet issue, or if they are Starfleet, they’re old enough to be considered antiques. Things you could find on the black market. Especially weapons, disruptors and the like.

Sirn: response

Horne: I think we can manage some of that.  Any pictures or models of anything we can reference to make the devices look more, uh, normal to the Syndicate?

Lystra: I don’t think you’ll have to worry about that. The Syndicate utilizes technology from all over the galaxy. While a lot of it is of Orion make, they do a lot of weapon smuggling and the like. So, as long as it can’t be traced as replicated by a Federation replicator we should be fine.

The Orion girl nodded in agreement. She had seen all sorts of weapons and honestly, even if they tracked it to a Federation replicator, if there was reports of stolen weapons, it could be easily tied back to that. Better to avoid it but it wouldn't be out of place. Her old Captain, Culdor Krettch loved his Federation phaser. Used to brag about it all the time.

Sirn: response

Taurik: Perhaps if we made them appear as normal communications devices or, perhaps, figure out a way to work them into the costumes of our personas.

Lystra: That can help. How we dress will be as important as how we act. There’s no clean and pressed among pirates. Generally. It’s well kept, but not the spit and polish of Starfleet.

Shedet's nose crinkled at that. That was a bloody stereotype. Yeah, some of the crews she had run fit into that image but not a lot of them. They were beings just like anyone else with a profession frowned upon by others. The Orion had the urge to correct Lystra and remind her not to assume but thought better of it...for now. They had pride in what they were.

Horne: response

Sirn: response

Taurik: We should be careful to make our choices agnostic, as we do not know what kind of ship we will receive. Further, I imagine our crew will look fairly… eclectic. We may be able to use any number of designs to help our deception.

Lystra: Potentially. As soon as we’ve spoken with Commander Saveron I’ve no doubt we’ll have a long list of things for everyone to consider.

Horne: response

Sirn: response

Taurik: The Commander also mentioned armor. Are there any particular things we might want to be aware of that the Syndicates use that we might be able to prepare for?

Lystra: Eh, it couldn’t hurt but as far as armor goes they’re not soldiers. So, whatever might fit or make sense as part of a uniform. Nothing specific. Don’t think in terms of uniformity. Everyone will need to have their own persona.

Horne: response

Sirn: response

Taurik: response

Lystra: Since the Commander asked some of us to stay, we’ll do our best to compile as much information on equipment, garb and the like for all of us to have a solid base to work from.

Shedet nodded and did not voice anything else for now. She just wanted to know what Commander Saveron had in store for them.

Horne: response

Sirn: response

Taurik: response

Lystra: I trust your engineering instincts. You’ll be fine on this mission.

Horne: response

Sirn: response

With the rest of the people moving on except for the three of them, Shedet shifted a bit in her chair and tried to look calm. The thought that she might be able to train people to go on the mission sounded fun. She just wished she was going too.

Saveron: Lieutenant Lystra, Lieutenant Sherana, Chief Petty Officer Shedet.

Shedet: Sir.

Sherana: response

Lystra: response

Saveron: I do not doubt that you all appreciate the gravity of the situation. I have asked you three to remain as I anticipate that you represent our best information resources on the Syndicate. Having said that, Lieutenant Sherana, I am aware that you are a naturalised Klingon. If you feel that you do not have relevant information on Orion culture or the Syndicate, you may return to your duties.

The ex-pirate grinned. Yes, she had a lot. Shedet just hoped she could teach enough.

Saveron: Lieutenant Lystra, I am aware of your history as captive of the Syndicate, and that this is a distressing subject for you. I do appreciate your unique insight. I also appreciate your revelation CPO Shedet, as having previously been part of one of the Cartels, and that you have now chosen a very different career and life path.

Ohhhhh. Well, that explained that. Lystra had been a prisoner for some reason. That would explain the negative opinion. That did not excuse the demonizing of all her people but she at least could understand.

Shedet: Of course, sir. Anything to get back the Commodore.

Yeah, she felt slightly guilty that her choice to join Starfleet was not as altruistic and life changing as Saveron made it out to be.

Lystra: response

Sherana: response

Saveron: What is important is that we are all working towards the same goal; the rescue of Commodore Rajel. I need to know that I can rely on everyone to work towards that cause. Anyone who cannot focus on that could put the mission in jeopardy. Lieutenant Davis has already excused himself; I would expect any who are similarly compromised to do the same.

Shedet: Of course, sir. I'm all for helping out.

Compromise the mission. Was she actually going to be on this?

Saveron: Very well. I have here Starfleet’s compiled information on the Syndicate. ::He placed a PADD on the table.:: What I am seeking now is the inside view. What information can we use, both to fit in ourselves, and to take advantage of the Syndicate?

Shedet: Well, Commander, when it comes to the Syndicate's culture, I think I might know the best. No offense to anyone but I think out of all of us with experience, mine is the most broad of all the social stratas.

Saveron: response

Sherana: response

Lystra: response

Shedet: I think the biggest thing that we need to understand approaching this is that they aren't just some loose rabble, they're highly organized and very big on your position with the ship, the cartel and the Syndicate as a whole. It's usually ranked lodubyal ot or Crime Lord, Sworn members of the Cartel that has taken the mark, magren or operators who are non-members in important positions and then the ships themselves. The etadubran or slave traders sit on par with the sworn members or below operators depending on the Orioskar's opinion of lodubyal-ket...slaves.

It was so easy to switch back into her language. Already her Federation had taken on the light lilt of their natural speech, a big reminder to Shedet of her mother tongue.

Shedet: I think the best we can do to play safe is not trying to be any higher than a ship crew. The captain of that ship will be respected like a magren and hold the title of lisk among the cartels. It's almost impossible to pretend to be a sworn member because of a specialized tattoo that has unique inks that are almost impossible to duplicate as the unique signature is recorded. They can literally scan your tattoo and verify your membership in the core Syndicate territories.

Saveron: response

Sherana: response

Lystra: response

Shedet quickly stopped with a smile, the lilt of her accent still heavily present.

Shedet: I can put more detail in a report for you, Commander.

Saveron: response

Sherana: response

Lystra: response
