((Isolation Ward 1 - Deck 12, USS Constitution-B))
Nazria set the wooden cube down, and accepted the pen from Mark.
She recalled frustration, the pen not writing. And sitting at Indrid's workstation trying to fix it.
Yirah: It was broken, Indrid had brought it to his workstation to try and fix it but got annoyed.
Mark: It’s broken? ::he asked, hoping that more memories would come.::
Yirah: Yes. You're supposed to be able to refill it by twisting this cartridge out like this.
She demonstrated how to open it.
Mark: Oh! I see, so it never really runs out. But what’s broken about it?
Nazria further took the pen apart. It wasn't damaging the pen to take it apart, the pen was meant to last a long time, to have parts repaired and replaced. Once the part was fixed she'd be able to put it back together just as easily.
Yirah: ::holding up a part:: See this? This is called the feed. But specifically there is something wrong with the ink channel and post. Those are the parts that let the ink move from the cartridge to the tip of the pen. Since it's broken no matter how much ink is in the pen it won't write.
Mark: Oh, clever! But I see the issue now. Honestly, I’ve never seen a pen like this before.
Yirah: Never? Understandable, it is of Trill design. Though I have seen similar principles applied to designs of pens from other worlds.
Mark: Maybe you could replicate the part you need?
Yirah: Maybe... ::concentrating on the broken piece:: ...but I'm not sure if something this old would be in the replicator. I wonder if it would work if the part comes from a different pen?
Mark: Actually, this sort of problem solving is showing a dramatically positive increase in your ability to regain connections between areas of the brain. That means the more you do, the more you should be able to access your memories.
Nazria looked up from the pen to notice Mark was back at his scans.
Yirah: Really? How much of a positive increase?
Mark: I’m not exactly sure yet, but let’s try to fix this pen and see what memories it brings back.
Yirah: ::shrugging:: Alright.
She turned back to examining the part.
Mark: response
Yirah: So what sorts of pen parts do we have in the replicator?
Mark: response
Nazria looked at the different designs. The Earth fountain pens looked similar on the surface but the post and ink channel were different.
Yirah: Hmm...
Mark: response
Yirah: Oh nothing. Just thinking... these pens look similar on the surface but different on the inside. Sort of like humans and Trills. Or any number of other humanoid species. ::pause, small sly grin:: Or are humans actually trilloid species?
She gave a small snort of amusement at her own joke.
Mark: response
