Mark: ::Encouragingly:: You’re doing great so far.  Don’t try to force it, just let the memories come to you.

The object was a delicate pen, intricate. It looked old. Mark didn’t have the slightest clue how to use it.

Yirah: Well, at least I know what that is. It's a pen. Belonged to Nalan Yirah. Yirah's first host. And it is one of the few objects that gets passed from host to host.

He nodded, wondering how many hands it had been held in over the years.

Mark: That sounds special, if it was passed from host to host. Do you remember anything else about it?

Yirah: It was broken, Indrid had brought it to his workstation to try and fix it but got annoyed.

That was good progress!  Mark waffled between being engrossed in the story and following the brain scans on the medical equipment beside him.

Mark: It’s broken? ::he asked, hoping that more memories would come.::

Yirah: Yes. You're supposed to be able to refill it by twisting this cartridge out like this.

He watched as Yirah opened the pen.

Mark: Oh!  I see, so it never really runs out. But what’s broken about it?

Yirah: ?

He watched, curious, looking at the inner workings of the pen as Yirah’s fingers moved deftly. Clearly the de-aging did not negatively affect manual dexterity. If anything, it improved it.

Mark: Oh, clever!  But I see the issue now.  Honestly, I’ve never seen a pen like this before.

Yirah: ?

Mark: Maybe you could replicate the part you need?

Yirah: ?

He paused and looked back at the scan data.

Mark: Actually, this sort of problem solving is showing a dramatically positive increase in your ability to regain connections between areas of the brain. That means the more you do, the more you should be able to access your memories.

Yirah: ?

Mark rocked on his feet wondering how this could be applied to the others. Would they all have to fix something? Would solving puzzles work?  What about building something or doing art?

So many things to try. But first he needed confirmation from science that they could reverse the de-aging process.

Mark: I’m not exactly sure yet, but let’s try to fix this pen and see what memories it brings back.

Yirah: ?
