Perax: I just thought animals used bioluminescence to look pretty, but then I’m an engineer not a biologist.

Maramox: Response

Lystra: I only know slightly more about that because it’s in our planetary security protocols, as a potential warning sign to look out for while planetside with hostile creatures. I learned it when we had that aquatic wedding since bioluminescence is very prevalent in aquatic lifeforms.

He looked at the Relkcoon, at the slope they were climbing, and back down in the vague direction of the runabout.

Perax: Should we leave it here or take it with us?

Yirah: How’d we even get it down to the shuttle.

Lystra: Not easily, it’d take at least two or three of us just to carry the thing.

Maramox: Response

Perax: Spots! I don’t know. Maybe it likes trail mix.

Maramox: response

Perax: We could try to hold it in stasis in a transporter buffer, and rematerialise it inside the shielded runabout. That would take care of weight, hopefully it would dematerialise properly.

Indrid frowned.

Yirah: Wouldn’t transporting it carry the same risks as us transporting?

Lystra: Yes. Absolutely. Given these creatures have Chrondite in their biology I don’t know if we want to risk trying to transport them anywhere.

Maramox: Response

Yirah: I’m just not sure that we need two peraoxstra-relkcoons.

He could tell he was losing the argument for a new pet.

Lystra: I don’t think we even need one. We have no idea how it would react in captivity and it would be unethical to just keep shooting it to stun it.

Maramox: response

Perax: But think about what we could learn about it with the resources of the Constitution.

Yirah: While we would be able to study it better in the labs. I don’t think that we should be taking it out of its environment at the moment. Not until we know that transporting it would be safe.

Lystra: I agree with Indrid. But, we should at least make use of the opportunity. Couldn’t we take a blood, and samples from it since it’s unconscious? Fur, tissue, and antler scrapings? We can bring those back for study and not risk further upsetting the creature by having it captive.

Maramox: response

Perax: I suppose you’re right.

He sighed, he put the thoughts of putting the creature on a leash and taking it for walks in the hallways of the Constitution and introducing it to other crew members aside. oO Hi, I’m Leran and this is my pet George. He’s a Peramoxlrydridrelkieelkorite, or something like that. I put googly eyes on him because he doesn’t have any eyes of his own, and people felt uncomfortable petting and talking to him without eyes to focus on. Oo

Yirah: And lets not forget why we decided to head up here originally, We still need to get the signal enhancer working to communicate with the Conny.

Lystra: Agreed. If we can make contact we should definitely get some advice from some experts. Lieutenant Ilix from Intel has a background in exozoology. I see him around Sarek all the time. If we do study these creatures he’d likely be the one to get the proper procedures on how to do so safely.

Perax: You’re right, we should get moving. ::he spoke with more confidence this time.::

Maramox/Yirah: Response

Perax: How much farther?

He looked at his tricorder which was mapping the path they had taken, but left much of the area ahead somewhat blank. There was general topography from the flyover in the runabout, but only the hike had details.

Lystra: Based on our earlier survey we’ve got about another two hundred meters to ascend. From what I can tell it should be an easier walk now that we’re up here on the ridgeline.

Maramox/Yirah: Response

Lystra: Ready when you all are. Looks like there’s more Relkcoons on the other side of the ridgeline from us. We’ll be moving away from them so hopefully we won’t have to worry about getting charged at again.

Perax: It’s still uphill.

Moving up the hillside with his pack, he fell into step with the rest of the group. He had to turn on the cooling system in the suit. With the extra weight of the suit, the weight of his pack and the tools in it, and the uphill hike, Perax was sweating profusely. He used a function in the suit to drink some water.

Nearly jumping out of his spots when Lystra let out a scream, he glanced around for the source and was momentarily blinded by the flash. The bang from the lightning bolt echoed in his helmet.

oO To close! Oo

Perax: Wait for the effects of blindness and deafness to pass. The suit compensates for the worst with insulation and light filters, but that was too close.

He hoped anyone could even hear him. His voice sounded far away as his ears rang.

Maramox/Yirah: Response

Lystra: I’m alright. I swear this place doesn’t want us here. ::she grumbled:: Give me a moment, my vision is still adjusting. oO Stupid nasty planet. Oo

After a minute, Perax began moving with the group again. He had to agree with Lystra. If the planet didn’t want them there, he would be happy to leave and go back to the Constitution and have tea and coffee with Maiman.

Maramox/Yirah: Response

Perax made the mistake of looking down into the valley past the ridge. The steep drop and the sharp rocks gave him the slightest sense of vertigo.

Perax: That’s a long way down. There is a natural formed steam vent up ahead, it might be good for a mineralogical survey when we have time.

Lystra: Will this spot work?

He looked around, and shrugged. He began setting up the signal enhancer again.

Perax: We can but try.

Maramox/Yirah: Response

It didn’t take too long to set up. The pieces were made to fit together quickly. He powered up the machine and began testing different frequencies, aiming at the sky, then stopping.

Perax: Who should I try to contact first? I can keep two signals open, but I can’t tune both simultaneously. Should I try to hail the Constitution or the other away team first?

Lystra/Maramox/Yirah: response

He nodded and proceeded to finish aiming at the sky. The signal was still reflecting off the atmosphere. He tried stronger frequencies, hoping to brute force the offending particles out of the way.

Perax: We better hope there are no pre-warp civilizations with the ability to detect our signals. This signal is powerful enough to be a flare on a dark night.

Lystra/Maramox/Yirah: response

Perax: =/\= Perax to the Constitution, can you hear us? =/\=

Unlike the previous time when there was no response, this time there was a crackling static filled answer. Unfortunately, it was difficult to make out any words.

Lystra/Maramox/Yirah: response

Perax: Let me try to clear it up. I can try to adjust the signal slightly. ::he turned a few dials, and tapped some buttons on the screen.:: =/\= Perax to Constitution, repeat last message. =/\=

The response was clearer this time. Though it still sounded like a badly tuned antique radio. The response crackled with static.

Bridge: =/\= response =/\=

Lystra/Maramox/Yirah: response
