Heeka: Have you ever broken a stone this large before?

T’Aven: Negative. But I am feeling... adventurous today.

So, Vulcans *could* admit to feelings. Feelings about breaking rocks with their fists, anyway. Imas made a note to not upset a Vulcan.

Heeka: It is your adventure to take.

Through the hazy shadow play that was still her vision, she was T’Aven approach the boulder, inspect it, contemplate it, then in one fast movement, strike it. It did not break in half, but it was damaged. Judging by T’Aven’s (non)reaction, that attempt must have hurt.

Heeka: Are you injured?

T'Aven: It is appropriately painful but I am unharmed. ::She flexed her hand a little to make sure it was really okay.::

Heeka: Good. Shall we get the sledgehammers?

Imas didn’t want to find herself in a situation where T’Aven was the eyes and Imas was the hands.

T'Aven: That won't be necessary.

After a moment, she struck the rock again. Imas swore she heard something organic breaking, and judging by T’Aven’s response she felt it too.

Heeka: Let's entertain another option before your hand is severely injured. Remember, I cannot see well *and* I lack your physical strength.

T'Aven took a step back to support herself against the tunnel's wall, while Imas felt the sting of admitted someone else was more capable than herself. Ah, the frailty of the Cardassian ego.

T'Aven: The kind of injury is unknown, but I believe it is safe to assume that the rock won the challenge.

Heeka: Perhaps. Though we have a saying on Cardassia: "striking is the first victory.” The will to try, despite risk and an unknown outcome, is necessary. Without it, other victories are not possible.

Though Imas shared the saying warmly, and to encourage T’Aven, the words felt sour in her mouth as she said them. That false dichotomy of Cardassian thinking, casting everything as “victory” or “defeat.” Life is too complex to treat it so simply. In studying the Tao, she had begun to notice more and more how much of what she had been taught and learned was ultimately predicated on Cardassian ideology, not *reality.*

T'Aven: You may want to use your weapon to cut the rock, Lieutenant.

Confusion.

Heeka: Weapon?? :: She reached to where her holster would be if she were in a Cardassian uniform, before checking her hips; only to brush over her phaser. Right! She still had it! :: Incredbile. T’Aven, I completely forgot that I had it after all the commotion.

T’Aven: ?

Heeka: Of course. Here, you do it since I can’t quite read the screen yet.

She offered the phaser to T’Aven. The lit screen was certainly easer to see than before, and she could almost make out what it said. Her eyes continued to recuperate.

T’Aven: ?

Imas stood back from the boulder, giving T’Aven clearance she needed to work.

T’Aven: ?
