((  Main Engineering, Deck 36, USS Constitution-B ))

Again they exchanged glances with one another. They hadn’t realized that someone could move a limb that rapidly nor truly understood the purpose of why anyone would want to. But then, canines were animals and not a technologically developed species. Perhaps it served some aesthetic purpose? It was a wonder of biology that their normal limbs didn’t rip free at those stresses.

Hexa: Oh, that is far faster than we had

Peta: anticipated. We will have to run a few

Hexa: thousand stress tests to ensure the connection between

Peta: the prosthetic and the patient won’t dislodge.

Sh'Prelleon: The size of the dog might play a role but some small dogs are surprisingly strong in their wag-force and some bigger dogs more gentle. I would suggest to look at the data by breed and then size, rather than only size.

The two of them nodded in unison when she made the suggestion about beginning with breeds first, then size.

Hexa: That is great data to have, we will

Peta: alter our approach accordingly. As for this

Hexa: wag force. This is an interesting unit of measurement

Peta: but it needs measurable parameters.

Hexa: What exactly are the measurements

Peta: of this wag force?

The pair looked up at the Andorian eager to hear the specifics of this, previously unknown to them, unit of measuring force.

Sh'Prelleon:  I do not believe that we have a set Parameter.

They exchanged a disheartened glance but quickly began to talk out a possible solution.

Hexa: Perhaps we could define such parameters

Peta: based off another unit of measure as a baseline?

Hexa: Perhaps something akin to warp factors?

Peta nodded to Hexa.

Peta: A Wag Factor scale. Wag Force scale. ::He corrected::

They looked back up at the Vet for her input. Based on her demonstration both Hexa and Peta were already equating the force used akin to Warp Factor five.

Sh'Prelleon: Going by the looks of it it might include strength and speed. Maybe force.

They both nodded.

Hexa: We are curious as to your

Peta: thoughts on the prosthetic.

Hexa: Would you like us to pursue other models for varied

Peta: species and types of limbs and craft generic prosthetics

Hexa: or do as we have and tailor them to the specific patient?

They could do both of course, as a generic model may suffice for a temporary solution as a need arises that could then be replaced later with a more streamlined and tailored prosthetic for the individual animal. After all, it was likely that such prosthetics may not be as necessary in an age when one could likely create a genetically cloned limb to replace the lost one. Having this option however, may be good to have in cases where these prosthetics might be the better route.

Sh'Prelleon: I believe that having limbs for animals that need them would be quite an improvement for them. Though I would suggest to make them on demand when needed to be able to properly fit them to said animal.

The pair nodded in unison to her reply.

Hexa: Very well, we

Peta:  appreciate your input.

Hexa: This is wonderful data to have

Peta: as it will help us improve our approach.

Sh'Prelleon: Though I would also advise to load your method and schematics to the database so installations across the fleet can utilize them if needed. ::She thought for a moment looking at the Fluffy tail in her hand.:: It may not have to be limited to tails either, many animals may lose a leg for example, the same mechanics may apply though with different joint models.

The pair looked at one another and smiled when they looked back at the Andorian. That was a wonderful idea that would, hopefully, benefit a great many more people than they had originally anticipated.

Their research had led them to discover that there was a significant number of Starfleet personnel that cared for various fauna. They wondered as to whether it was due to some genetic imperative or merely a byproduct of the Starfleet way of life and galactic view that drew their personnel to caring for sentient but not sapient lifeforms.

Hexa: That is a wonderful

Peta: idea. The more who can benefit

Hexa: from our designs the better. And we

Peta: already have designs for a few limbs that we haven’t made

Hexa: any physical prosthesis yet.

Sh'Prelleon: Can these prosthetics be replicated or do they need to be hand crafted? How long would it take to make one tailored for the animal once the kinks are ironed out and you have a working prototype?

Hexa: This one was made using entirely replicable

Peta:  parts. We felt the ability to make these easily

Hexa: was as important as them being able to function as

Peta: efficiently as possible. Why do you inquire?

Sh'Prelleon: I only ask because if the creation of the final piece after this initial creation point can be done in a short time a temporary limb or tail might not be necessary. In that case it wouldn't be needed to create 'stock limbs'. If it takes weeks, that would be a different story.

Again they nodded in unison.

Hexa: This model took seventy two hours to

Peta:  manufacture due to its nature as a prototype.

Hexa: We went through fifteen iterations before

Peta: completing this one.

Hexa: Once finalized, the prosthesis should

Peta:  only take fourteen hours to produce.

Sh'Prelleon: Response

The pair of Bynars smiled brightly and looked at the Andorian with a bit of pride. As engineers it was always a joy when they were able to keep things running, or make new things that could help others.

Hexa: We thank you for your feedback

Peta:  miss Sh’Prelleon. Would you mind if we

Hexa: sent you the schematics and prototypes for other limbs

Peta: and for various species types to get your continued feedback on?

Sh'Prelleon: Response

Hexa: Thank you! We will leave you to

Peta:  your work unless you have any further

Hexa: suggestions or questions for us?

Sh'Prelleon: Response

((Ooc: More than glad to continue if you like, Jess. Sorry for taking so long to post this. I completed it but never sent it! ))

Hexa and Peta smiled brightly as they turned for the door, their prosthetic back in its case and being carried by Peta. They had more work to do and now that they knew the prosthetic was complete, they could send it to their former compatriot back on Utopia Planitia.
