((Perax’s Quarters, Deck 8, USS Constitution-B))
Perax flopped into his desk chair facing the simulated window showing the starbase and the traffic around it. He watched briefly as a worker bee flew the through an opening in the starbase hull. He felt completely exhausted by the Masquerade Party.
Perax: Computer, open a comm channel to the Spotted Owl. ::he waited the few moments it took to establish the connection.:: Hi, Mom.
Yenara: =/\= Leran! When are you going to come back home? We’ve lost 0.6 percent efficiency in the warp drive since you left. =/\=
Perax: ::he spoke slightly exasperated:: Mom, I’m not coming home. I’m calling because I wanted you all to know I was promoted. I’m now a Lieutenant Junior Grade.
He watched as she registered his information with a degree of surprise.
Yenara: =/\= That’s quick isn’t it? You’ve got such talent. Wouldn’t it be more fulfilling to work on our freighter again? =/\=
Perax: Mom, I’ve made a commitment to Starfleet, and I’m going to see it through. Besides, how am I supposed to prove myself to the Symbiosis Commission when they already rejected my application because spending my entire life on a freighter added nothing to the symbiont.
oO And even more besides, if I go back now, I probably wouldn’t get to see the friends I’ve made again. I wouldn’t get to see Maiman again. Oo
His mother became stern and grumpy.
Yenara: =/\= One of these days, Starfleet will find itself in a war, and you’ll be stuck in the middle of it. You’ll be damaged and crushed, if you survive that is. =/\=
Perax: Mom!
Yenara: =/\= ::She spoke in clipped voice:: I’ll pass the news of your promotion along.=/\=
A moment later, Perax stared at the emblem of the United Federation of Planets somehow feeling deflated. He got ready for bed and hoped his first day as a Lieutenant Junior Grade was a good one.
