(( Research Lab 3, Deck 8 ))
The lab was one of the Science labs that had a multipurpose. Since
Botany didn't have its own, they would be using those most of the
time and this was the nearest to the Arboretum a deck above. Sherana
stood at one of the consoles in her cargo pants and sweater, her
hand pulled throught he back of her working baseball hat. Her green
skin glistened slightly since it was warm in her as well, the labs
were closer to the ship hull so it radiated from whatever the Bridge
Crew or engineering was doing.
Evria: Hello, Sherana.
The Klingon raised Orion looked up and offered a brief nod.
Sherana: Since we are not sure what kind of samples we'll get and if
they also will bring whole plants, I have reserved us his lab for
further research on those samples once they arrive.
Evria: Okay.
Sherana: I have checked Science for any information on the planet
but so far we only have some information on the nebula itself. But
it seems the information is not yet complete, which means they are
still working on finding out the exact consistency. I assume it has
some impact on the planet's atmosphere as well, but we'll need more
data from the away teams to find out how much.
Evria: It certainly has an impact on the planet *having* an
atmosphere. Rogue planets are typically snowed out.
Sherana: ::She turned to the other woman and inhaled.:: I hope they
will give us a chance to visit the planet as well to have a look in
person.
Evria: That might be up to whatever company we have out there.
Sherana: Right. ::She grumbled.:: If they have claims they may
forbid further visits.
Evria: Only the Constitution could discover a rogue planet in a
nebula at the same time as somebody else. But I still hope to go
down there.
Sherana: It is quite on point for this ship, isn't it? ::She paused
and stepped to another console.:: We may have to consider the
different environmental requirements for these plants.
Evria: Any life down there will be drawing energy from the nebula.
So the "plants" might not be using true photosynthesis.
Sherana: The lack of a sun does indicate that.
Evria: I'd actually love some whole plant samples. Plants that draw
energy from alternative sources may be valuable, especially if they
turn out to be edible. I wouldn't try without a lot of scans,
though.
Sherana: I agree.
Evria: I'm thinking of certain scientific outposts that are near
non-standard stars. Or...our nocturnal friends might be interested
in plants that don't need light to grow.
Sherana: It may be similar to Linara plant life as they do not have
a sun to power regular photosynthesis either. However Leron IV does
not have the influence of a nebula like this.
Evria: Response
Sherana: Wouldn't it be fascinating to compare and host the plants
of two very different origins, both grown in darkness under
different circumstances with different requirements for energy
sources?
There was a spark in her eyes, an excitement in her voice, that did
not translate to her face in a smile. A challenge that was almost as
exciting as an opponent.
Evria: Response
Sherana: ::nodding:: If we use the Linara example as a base, the
energy comes in parts from thermal energy, energy through water flow
and in other parts by plants having adjusted to need as little light
as possible. ::She straightened, again that excitement in her
eyes.:: In some cases the presence of each other is enough light to
feed energy into each other, by providing fluorescence.
Evria: Response
Sherana: A shame that we won't know before we can have a look at
them. I wonder if the crew of this other ship has botanists who have
already explored the flora.
Evria: Response
