(( Holodeck 3, USS Constitution-B ))

As the door closed behind the maintenance tech that diagnosed the malfunction; Byron, satisfied that he was alone, only half knelt before simply dropping his tools on the floor in front of the holodeck emitter-corporialization matrix-calibration parameter co-processor on the wall, exposed via the panel removed by the tech.

The tech opened the panel, diagnosed the problem and decided they didn't want to deal with it. So it got kicked up the ladder.

But all the relevant maintenance specialists were on the bloody Enterprise from the past or some such nonsense, and he had taken on holodeck maintenance on the Thrombax because she was a small ship on long missions, and someone had to keep the holodecks running.

Byron gritted his teeth. The co-processor was an old Yoyodyne 2308. They dabbled for a bit with manufacturing holodeck parts before sticking with what they did well: shipbuilding. He'd read about the Yoyodynes 2308s, and how they were great until they weren't. They'd sometimes just fail, but in ways that somehow eluded scans. It was a physical object, nothing fancy. And yet it managed to become this mythical thing. The joke was that those 2308s were haunted by the ghosts of all the terminated programs of people the holodeck created.

Byron thought that joke was stupid. It's just a poorly designed chip, and the holodeck should be retrofit for a newer coprocessor. A day's work at any Starbase, no problem. On the Thrombax, they had to think about the long term. Life on the Constitution is much more relaxed. Oh, the holodeck went down? Not to worry, if anything seriously is wrong, we'll just cruise back to our cozy starbase.

He groused to himself as he looked up where the replacement 2308s were kept. As requisitions officer, he was lucky enough to have to go get his own parts too.

A few hours later, he was done with it and closed the panel back up. The holodeck was again in working.
