(( Quarters - USS Constitution-B ))

Her Matron, Ishiv, attempted to call her twice so far but all Shedet
could do was stare at the screen with the blinking notice. The time she
had to wait was past and Ishiv of the Order of Tempesta wanted an
answer. When the blond Orion girl had left Ishiv only 24 hours earlier,
she had made up her mind to go back to her home-world but the
conversation with Jalana had changed all that. She was unsure now.

The alert began blinking again. Taking a big breath, she tapped the
accept. The screen filled with the face of her Matron.

Ishiv: Ah. There you are. I wasn't sure if you had gotten back to your
quarters yet.

Shedet: ::quietly:: I'm here.

Ishiv: I've gotten everything lined up. We're going to use the old Yodan
Shipping cargo office for our departure. I've already purchased passage
on a friendly freighter. I just need to know when you're going to be here.

Shedet: I'm not.

Ishiv: ::confused:: What? What do you mean?

Shedet took a deep breath and tried to stop her shaking limbs. She
needed strength right now.

Shedet: I'm not going back.

Ishiv: You're not.

It was more of a statement than a question. The expressiveness of
Ishiv's face had changed to a hard, neutral expression.

Ishiv: And why not? This is not your home.

Shedet: Neither is the home-world. I don't have a home.

Ishiv opened her mouth to speak but The Orion cut her off.

Shedet: I've been living between two worlds this entire time and I need
to make a home. That's why I'm going with Starfleet.

Ishiv: Starfleet is antithetical to everything you were raised.

Shedet: Because I'll be more accepted there than with you.

Shedet grabbed a handful of her thick, blond hair and showed it to Ishiv.

Shedet: I haven't forgotten I have this. You know that no matter what I
do, I'll always have this curse against me.

Ishiv: Shedet---

Shedet: It's ingrained in our culture just as much as the Syndicate, the
Matrons, and the Orders. I'm Ulva. Unwanted.

Ishiv: If it's the color of your hair there are solutions.

Shedet: You see, that's why I want to stay with Starfleet. I don't have
to change myself.

Ishiv: Shedet...

Shedet: I've made my decision, Ishiv. I'm sorry that I cannot meet the
duties of a maiden of your order. I accept whatever penalty that must be
applied.

Ishiv was silent and seemed to be lost in thought. Her eyes hardened and
she gave a curt nod as if coming to a decision.

Ishiv: Then so be it, Shedet. You are no longer welcome among your kind.
You are Chuldav'ai. Outcast. You have no rights, no privileges, no kin,
and no friendship with us any longer.

Before Shedet could say anything else, the transmission cut.
Instinctively she wanted to call back but stopped. Her call would go
unanswered. She had made her decision.

She was now alone.
