((Rosek’s Quarters, Deck 9, USS Chin’toka))

{{Time Index: Day 1 of Shoreleave}}

Maddy had long since gone to bed and Lael was taking the time to catch up on her messages. Missions were a busy time and rarely had enough downtime for a thorough perusal of her inbox. She took a sip of her tea, frowning when she noticed a particular message from an unidentified sending. Setting the mug aside, she entered a command to open it, but it was encrypted and required a passcode to open.

Putting her coding knowledge to use, she used a backdoor subroutine she’d created in order to at least obtain the origin. To her surprise, it worked. Reading the aspects of the coding, her eyebrows arched. It was in German, an old Earth language not commonly used since Earth’s nations had united under one flag.

She paused, exiting the coding screen, and returned to the place where the computer was requesting a passcode. A thought occurred to her and she thoughtfully entered “mein spatz”. Instantly, the file opened, revealing a letter in German.

The more she read, the more she realized who it was from. There was only one other person who knew the nickname her grandfather had given her.

Rosek: ::whispers:: Kell.

The letter wasn’t super specific, but it did give her enough to know he was in trouble. She turned toward her commbadge and grimaced. As much as she hated to bother Mei with something like this, she was going to need his help.

Opening a new message, she provided a quick response. Once that was done, she used the same encryption technique that Kellan had, adding an extra layer. If someone tried to enter the passcode three times and failed, the message would delete itself. She was counting on Kellan to remember the critical piece of information from their childhood that would help him open it.
