((USS Chin’toka, Deck 11, Security Chief Office))
((All of these feelings and opinions are IC. None of them reflect the OOC opinions of the player))
Seleya: What did you want to talk about, Lieutenant?
Is’Kah: I’ve noticed that you were uncomfortable around loud noises, and then you were affected the most by the sonic boom when the ship was flown into the atmosphere. Does your species have any audio sensitivities I should be aware of?
Seleya: Our Ny’krl can pick up sounds that most other species that aren’t sensitive to sound can’t hear, but all of that should be public records.
Is’Kah: I understand that you think it isn’t an issue, but if I were to take out a blow horn and use it right now, are you going to collapse and become incapacitated from it? There are dozens of what-ifs running through my mind right now of how to use your sensitivity against you tactically.
Seleya was just stunned by that comment from her boss. Her only response was to blink as her mind processed it, allowing Is’kah to continue on.
Is’Kah: I’m not worried about the known unknowns and your ability to prepare for them. The issue is with the unknown unknowns, as shown by Ensign Callahan’s flying.
Seleya called back on her training with the Heritage Guard to remain expressionless and professional as she decided to ask Is’kah a few questions in return.
Seleya: Can that not apply to anyone, Lieutenant?
Is’Kah: Not in this case, because you were the only one to remain incapacitated for an extended time as a result of said flying.
Seleya drew in a deep breath. She could feel frustration and anger building. The reason she stayed down had nothing to do with her sound sensitivity, but there was no way she was ever going to explain that with her Chief, especially not now.
Seleya: Why is this just now becoming an issue, Lieutenant?
Is’Kah: We were deployed before I could speak with you about my concerns, Lieutenant Seleya.
oO Oh! So now she is using this one situation to justify her entirely incorrect way of thinking. Oo
Seleya: So what are you wanting to do about this?
Is’Kah: First, I would like to apologize for my poor word choices a few moments ago. What I said was dismissive and more than a little disrespectful. That was not my intention.
Seleya: It was more than just that.
Seleya could go on. She thought it was ignorant, a bit racist, insulting, and very, very stupid to jump to such wild conclusions without any basis in reality or fact.
Is’Kah: The reason why I wanted to speak with you was to find out what I can do for you to alleviate this, either by choosing someone else for any mission with crowds, or working with you to find a way to negate this issue in the field. No one should suffer from pain just because they are on duty.
And it was that moment which caused some of Seleya’s anger to seep through her usual discipline. There was no way her boss, a Starfleet department chief, was seriously suggesting that she be passed over for duties because of something zha merely -perceived- as an issue, when it wasn’t one at all. It felt less like a discussion on how to “help” and more like an attempt to sideline her.
Seleya: You can do nothing. I did not ask you for help, nor is this any of your business.
Is’Kah: I would prefer to avoid requesting that you use daily medications. How uncomfortable is the sound-dampening device?
And just when Seleya thought Is’kah couldn’t get any worse, zha did. The very idea that zha believed they had the power to recommend daily medication, without any medical training whatsoever, was nothing short of blatant arrogance.
And the gall of Is’kah suggesting that Seleya be made to wear a sound-dampening device, cutting her off from a sense so fundamental to how she experienced the world and even understand her own language, was beyond tolerable. This conversation had gone on long enough.
Seleya: That is entirely inappropriate, and again, none of your business. You have no authority when it comes to my personal health. It goes entirely against what Medical has said and Starfleet Policy.
Seleya was not going to stand by any longer. Whatever respect Is’kah may have had once was gone now. The line hadn’t just been crossed, it might as well have been blasted into annihilation.
Is’Kah: Response
Seleya: No, this conversation is stopping now. This is blatant discrimination and I am not going to be pulled off duty or treated differently because you think I need coddling.
Is’Kah: Response
Seleya: I am going to leave to report this to the First Officer, and command staff can continue this conversation with you on why this is entirely inappropriate.
Seleya didn’t even give Is’kah a chance to respond before she turned and stormed out of the office, out of the entire security complex, which had become the last place she wanted to be on the ship, as she headed for the turbolift.
