(( Sickbay, Deck 10, USS Chin’toka ))
It had been a long night. Hours that passed slowly. He was exhausted, but not as exhausted as Aine was. She and the baby were in a privacy suite in Sickbay now, resting. And for the first time, Mel felt he could breathe. As he sat in a chair in the Chief Medical Officer’s office he couldn’t help but think, over and over, that he was now a father. Happiness mixed with nervousness.
Edrei: Hey, you okay?
Mel looked up, the voice beside him pulling him back into reality.
Martinson: Hey Doc, I’m good. I’m just…
Edrei: A little overwhelmed?
She replicated some water, which she passed to him.
Martinson: ::taking the glass of water:: Yeah, just a little. I think I was just really surprised how scared she was through it all. She’s had her doubts about being a parent, but you could really see how scared she is.
She gave him a sympathetic smile. The last few hours had obviously been difficult for both new parents, and even though Lee wasn’t a mother herself, it wasn’t the first time she had helped deliver a baby. Every time, both parents had an 'oh crap, I’m now responsible for a whole human being' moment at some point, so it wasn’t surprising.
Edrei: Please. You’re both going to be amazing parents, I don’t doubt it one second.
Martinson: Thanks, Doc. Always helps hearing it from an outside voice, you know?
Mel could feel a slight relief come over him. He hadn’t really had any doubts up until it was time, it was really the idea that they were in this together for sure now, in a way her doubts became his. But it really didn’t matter because they were in it now. For better or for worse.
Edrei: ::grinning:: Yeah, for sure. She’s gonna teach her how to hold a phaser before she even learns to walk, I’m sure.
Martinson: ::letting out a small chuckle:: I really doubt that. Given who she is, I can see why people might joke about that. But, ::looking around to make sure no one else was listening:: she’s not like that in private.
Lee raised her eyebrows in mild surprise.
Edrei: ::chuckling:: Really? I wouldn’t have thought.
Martinson: Believe it or not, the idea of that baby joining Starfleet one day, that scares her. I saw a onesie that said “Future Cadet” on it and she freaked.
Lee was starting to see Aine in a whole new light. She’d pictured her as a I-fear-nothing badass (except for Sickbay, apparently), but Mel was proving to be of invaluable insight.
Edrei: ::quietly:: Oh damn. Now that’s a plot twist. But that’s kinda sweet, actually. Your child’s probably going to be the most protected one in the quadrant, then.
Martinson: She didn’t tell you?
She tilted her head questioningly.
Edrei: The name? Nope. Radio silence.
It hadn’t been helped by the fact Aine seemed to have kept her visits to Sickbay to a minimum - and even then, it felt like she’d counted the seconds until she could be let go.
Martinson: Oh, well, it’s Esme. Esme Martinson-Sherlock.
Lee could swear she could feel her heart melt at that, and she gave a big cheesy smile to Mel.
Edrei: That is so lovely. It suits her perfectly. Is there a story behind it?
There wasn’t really, not behind either of them choosing it. For Aine, it was an old name that was common in hers and families from where she was from. She just like it because it wasn’t so common anymore. For Mel, he’d looked into some traditional names and that was the one that stood out to him. A small coincidence.
Martinson: Well, we both came up with lists, and they weren’t very good. But we both had that one on there. It’s a really old name that her people used to use. And, another thing you probably don’t know about her, she’s really big into traditions, or at least learning about them.
Edrei: ::smiling:: I love that. It’s like she already has one hell of a legacy waiting for her.
Martinson: If she’s anything like her mom, that’s for sure. Regardless of what Aine thinks she’ll be able to make that kid do or not do, she’s gonna do it.
Edrei: Are you planning to raise her on the Chin’toka?
It was no breaking news that having a baby on a Starfleet vessel could prove to be quite stressful for the parents.
Martinson: Yes. There was some talk of me and the baby going to Bajor, where her sister lives now. But neither of us wanted to be away. And I’ve moved to Reserve Officer status. She’ll be able to keep going about her career like normal.
She slowly nodded.
Edrei: That sounds like a reasonable compromise. You’ll want to keep things as normal as possible. That’s good.
Martinson: It won’t be easy, we know that. But, it is what it is, you know?
Like there was anything easy about welcoming a child to the world.
Edrei: It won’t feel like a walk in the park, that’s for sure. But you both are prepared and reasonable adults. You’ll pull it off.
Martinson: She’ll want to go back to our quarters as soon as possible. She’s hard headed like that. But, it’s your call, Doc. If everything’s alright, we’ll be out of here in a few hours?
She smirked. That definitely sounded like Sherlock. She hadn’t expected her to stay for the minimum amount of time recommended.
Edrei: Sure, I don’t see why not. ::she gave him a pointed look:: But please call me if anything changes.
He stood, slowly, and handed the glass back to Leenaya, awkwardly.
Martinson: I’m going to go be with them then. Thanks again.
Mel gave Leenaya one last nod as he slowly shuffled off towards the privacy room that Aine and Esme were in. He could feel the tiredness creeping through his whole body.
