((Village, Surface of PTE - 2891’s Fourth Planet))

This whole day had been one grand misadventure that he’d be happy not to repeat. They seemed to be going in circles (at times, literally) and not really getting anywhere. Though they knew a bit more than they had before, something just wasn’t making sense and he couldn’t put his finger on it. Mentally, shaking the thoughts away, he refocused his attention on guarding the doorway.

Vorenus: Talk is cheap...sir.

His gaze flickered in Elizabeth’s direction and his stomach dropped. This wasn’t who he was, but who the situation had necessitated him to be. If Vorenus did push his luck and Kas was forced to follow through with his threat, would he be able to live with himself? Exhaling, he mentally shook the thoughts from his head and posed against the inside of the doorframe, ready to stun anyone who came through that door. His gaze went to Vorenus’s and he nodded, indicating he should do the same.

Kesex: ::whispers to Vorenus:: Only shoot if they come through that door. Make sure it’s set to stun.

Vorenus: ::Whispers to Kas:: Hey.

Doing his best not to appear or sound exasperated, he was forced to split his attention between his guard duty and Vorenus wanting his attention.

Kesex: Did you see something?

Vorenus: What do you make of this?

Kas’s brow furrowed as he studied some message on the arm device Vorenus had been wearing since they woke up, possibly even before. He couldn’t quite make out what it said.

Vorenus: You think I should press it?

Kesex: ::pauses:: Probably best not to until we know what pressing it will do. Last thing we want is to bring all of the people in this place down on us.

They leaned against the wall in relative silence, Kas on alert for anyone who might have caught them. Suddenly, he heard boots shuffle and then stop, followed by the sound of people talking. From the volume and angle, the person was standing right in the doorway. His heart thudded against the inside of his chest, hoping that the person would move on as most of the others had.

Whoever was listening, however, seemed to be ignoring his hope. The man and three others entered the room. If the men turned, they were exposed.

He motioned silently to Vorenus to wait, then raised a hand, counting backward from three. The element of surprise was critical if they wanted to take these men down without risking them alerting others. When he reached one, he raised his weapon just as one of them turned, the shot from his phaser hitting the man at the center of his chest. He didn’t have time to think as he fired at the second man while Vorenus took aim at the third.

With the men unconscious on the floor, he did a quick count. One, two…three? Hadn’t there been a fourth?

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Elizabeth struggling and moved to help her. But before he could get there, she and Einar had taken care of it. A grin crossed his lips.

Kesex: Nice moves.

Vorenus: Response

Kesex: ::nods:: We’ve worn out our welcome in this room. Move the bodies out of the line of sight. ::to Elizabeth:: You have a route for us to that other room?

Before she could respond, sparks were flying from near the console and the alarm sounded, drowning out most speech. He grimaced, noting that Elizabeth covered her ears against the noise. It was so loud that he couldn’t really make out what the computerized voice was saying.

Snow: Is anyone seriously injured? ::loud enough to be heard through the blaring alarms::

He opened his mouth to speak, but closed it and simply shook his head.

Vorenus: Response

Snow: You said that thing was a life sign detector? I think now would be a great time to put it to use and get as far away from here as possible while still avoiding detection. I can treat minor wounds once we get somewhere else. ::with the same volume intensity::

Kesex: ::to Vorenus:: Is there any way to set that thing to passive scans in case they can use it to track us?

Vorenus: Response

Though he was tempted to take the men’s weapons in case they needed them, he ultimately decided against it. They’d committed enough violence here and it bothered him more than he cared to admit. As they moved farther from the room, the alarms began to fade and he could actually hear himself think again.

Snow: We could always double back and check that room we found some of our things in for the suits we need. Chances are more people will be worried about the alarms in that room and repairs than us at the moment. Whatever it was sounded pretty serious.

Kesex: ::nods:: Regardless of where we’re headed, we’ll need those.

Vorenus: Response

As they rounded a corner, they found themselves face to face with a large group of beings. These were unlike the other men they’d discovered in that they didn’t look entirely solid. More like floating energy. How was it possible there were this many in the facility and how had they not appeared on Vorenus’s arm brace.

He tensed as one of the floating bodies of energy drew closer. At first, there was nothing. It didn’t speak nor did it move. Gradually, he heard a voice, almost disembodied, that increased in volume.

Aimot: ~ …peace, creature. We mean you no harm. ~

His gaze flickered to Elizabeth, Vorenus, and Einar, wondering if they heard it, too. The very fact that this lifeform was talking to them, rather than trying to incapacitate them spoke volumes. He glanced at Vorenus, a warning in his eyes as he held his hand out to stop the man from reaching for his weapon. His attention then turned back to the creature.

Kesex: Who are you? What do you want with us?

Aimot: ~ We are the guardians of this world and its people, protecting them from the pointed-eared warriors that would have destroyed them if not for our intervention. ~

Kesex: oO Pointed eared warriors? Oo

Snow / Vorenus: Responses

Aimot: ~ Your ears are not like theirs and you incapacitated rather than killed. Are you here in their stead? ~

Kesex: Look, I have no idea who you’re talking about. We’re just trying to figure out who brought us here and why.

Snow / Vorenus: Responses

The energy creature floated silently for long moments. Suddenly, Kas heard what he presumed to be several other voices join the first. Their conversation was staticky at best and the sheer volume caused him to wince and his head to throb.

Aimot: ~ How can you be certain you are not their puppets? Your memories have been erased. ~

Kesex: Well, the only way to know for sure is to give them back to us.

Aimot: ~ So you can destroy us once they have? ~

Snow / Vorenus: Responses

Kesex: ::nods:: Right. If that had been our intention, we would have come around that corner shooting.
