(( Dr. Yomai’s Office, Miralorn Medical Research Foundation ))

Edrei: What's the timeline on this epidemic, from when you estimate the index case was infected and were made aware of it to the quarantine?

Yomai: We detected the first cases about three weeks ago and symptoms appeared one week later. After the first patient death one week ago we immediately began partial quarantine measures. As of three days ago we have implemented a full quarantine.

That was too long to take action in his mind, but who was he to disrupt the tourists.

Koyama: That seems fairly fast for a planet wide disease.

The ensign was right, the timeline showed an “aggressive” disease. So aggressive that Dr. Yomai had even considered the disease’s origins might be not as simple as the right bacteria at the right time. But would the Starfleet officers see it the same way?

Edrei: So we might have a window of opportunity to act on it strongly here.

Yomai: Our hope is that once you can get a medical team down here you can find a way to fabricate a vaccine for the pathogen. Our research facility is at your disposal.

Not that the Waleth had anything a Federation vessel would need. But he at least wanted to extend a gesture of cooperation.

T'Ama: Thank you. Finding a solution is our hope as well.

Yomai: We have some samples for you to examine yourself once you arrive at the facility. I’d send them over but sadly we cannot risk the pathogen getting off the planet.

Edrei: Understandably. We'll come and see for ourselves.

T’Ama: Of course, though, send what data you have on over.

Yomai: When will we expect you to arrive?

T'Ama: Our ETA is currently four days.

He nodded as he took notes on his PADD.

Yomai: I’ll have my team get whatever you need. Any requests?

Koyama: I'd like to get some information on your cities antigravity techniques - I have concerns that they could be affecting planetary wind patterns and contributing to the contagion's spread.

He raised an eyebrow at the Ensign’s question. He didn’t know much about the habitat’s antigravity systems, he barely knew about their atmospheric systems outside of what they can do to spread the pathogen.

Yomai: I don’t know much about our antigravity systems. But what I do know is that our habitats are completely closed off to the outside atmosphere to ensure we have a habitable atmosphere inside the platforms.

Koyama: ::pausing, then asking pensively:: ****Dr. Yomai, just to be sure, have you confirmed that your environment suits are sufficient to keep your staff safe? What kind of containment measures have you used?

The doctor gave Koyama a bewildered look at her question. He had heard stories of the supposed “Federation arrogance” towards non-member worlds, particularly about their technology, but he never thought it was actually a real thing. Just some propaganda made up by Romulans to dissuade neutral worlds from picking a side in their cold war. But here was an officer, asking if the Waleth-designed environment suits could protect the Waleth from said environment. He let out a heavy sigh and spoke.

Yomai: I assure you, ensign. Our environment suits are more than sufficient to keep us safe. I would know as I’ve been using them and haven’t been infected yet. As for containment, we have enforced a strict quarantine, all those who have homes are not permitted to leave them and any tourists are confined to their hotel room or if they don’t have a room, a large social space where we suggest social distancing as we keep them heavily monitored.

Edrei: On your end, is there anything you're in need of? Reagents, meds...?

T’Ama: Ventilators?

Yomai: We would like more ventilators. Sadly our planet is woefully under equipped for an epidemic.

Koyama: Response

Edrei: Sure, we can proceed that way. ::she looked to the others:: All good on my end.

T'Ama: Well I have more questions. It mostly affects the respiratory system? Does it develop into pneumonia? Have you had success putting people on ventilators until they recover?

Yomai: Yes it has developed into pneumonia and we have been able to successfully recover people put on ventilators. The only problem is not enough ventilators for those who have serious symptoms. We don’t have enough data to make an exact estimate of how many of them have serious symptoms but we’re looking at one in five patients develop serious symptoms.

T’Ama: How many full time inhabitants are there on the planet, and how many tourists? What percentage of the population is currently infected?

Jin was about to chime in before Dr. Edrei interrupted him. Were Starfleet officers always like this?

Edrei: And among them, how many are affected by serious symptoms?

He nodded as he thought about her question for a moment. It was a good one despite how rudely it was asked.

Yomai: We currently have 2.3 billion full time inhabitants on the planet. We’re currently in an off season so planet-wide we have around 1.3 million tourists visiting. And among the population we’re looking at around 7% infected.

A percentage that not only formed within three weeks but is still growing. It unsettled Jin that something could spread that fast.

Koyama: Response

T’Ama: Does it primarily infect Waleth? How readily does it infect other species?

He thought about her question for a moment. There had been a disturbing trend among the infections, all species could be infected by it, but the majority of serious cases that lead to death were other Waleth.

Yomai: Other species can be infected by it, however the majority of serious cases are from Waleth. So far the only deaths have been from my fellow Waleth, but of course that can change. Which has of course started some speculation as we determine the cause of the virus.

Koyama: Response

Edrei: Well, that's certainly one way of looking at it.

T’Ama: Oh, also, Ensign Koyama wanted historical atmospheric data and a live feed to that if possible.

Yomai: I will put in a request.

Dr. Yomai punched in a command to his terminal to retrieve atmospheric data from the past few years.

Koyama: Response

Edrei: Your current research on the pathogen and the preliminary results would also be useful.

Yomai: I’ve taken the liberty of sending the data over already, I presume you have something planned once you receive it doctor?

Koyama/T'Ama: Response

Edrei: The more brains on it, the better. Ideally I want to cross check your data to see if it matches anything in our medical database, assess the risks taken by our crew and the amount of medicine and equipment we should bring over.

He nodded in response. It was sound logic, as much as he wished he could just ask for an amount specific to their needs he also knew the Chin’toka could only provide so much.

Koyama/T'Ama: Response

Edrei: We have the chance of having our own expertises ::she looked to T'Ama and Koyama::. The diversity of perspectives might just help us come up with a potential cure.

Yomai: I do appreciate Starfleet sending down a diversified team. We have had some of our own inter-departmental workings since the beginning of this outbreak.

Koyama/T'Ama: Response

Yomai: We’ve had some theories that the atmospheric system’s biofilters might not be picking up the pathogen which is why it’s able to spread from platform to platform. Our engineering team is hard at work on it but an outside perspective in the lab might help.

Koyama/T’Ama/Edrei: Response

Yomai: We were also wondering if you could send down some officers to help with enforcing quarantine with the larger tourist groups. So far we’ve had them confined to one area and have allowed some wandering since the disease primarily attacks Waleth. But we’re worried about it possibly spreading to other staff, we just don’t have the resources to keep them under watch.

Koyama/T’Ama/Edrei: Response
