MSNPC Dr. Jin Yomai - Pathogen Troubles

Waleth culture was centered around service to others, although most Waleth take up a job in their tourism industry Jin had other ways of service in mind. He studied medicine, particularly epidemiology since the Waleth’s home of Miralon III was practically one big super spreader event. In his mind, that was of infinitely higher value than running whatever new table the Ferengi brought to his local resort. 

However, his service was only wanted when it was convenient. As when he first blew the whistle about the new pathogen it took some heavy convincing to even start a proper response. Sadly, by his estimates it wouldn’t have mattered how fast the response was. They would have to enforce a strong quarantine either way.

Thankfully the Federation had sent the USS Chin’toka to aid in efforts to combat the deadly pandemic that had started to spiral out of control. He had low hopes that the medical team could lead to an immediate breakthrough, but if he could have access to Federation medical technology that was highly coveted in his field, he might be able to get the roulette wheel spinning.

He straightened his lab coat then hailed the ship from the terminal on his desk. It wasn’t long before three Starfleet officers were on his screen.

T’Ama: Dr. Yomai? I am Lieutenant Commander T’Ama, acting first officer of the Federation starship Chin’toka. I will be coordinating our medical efforts to assist you. This is Ensign Koyama, an engineer, and Lieutenant Junior Grade Dr. Edrei, a medical officer.

He nodded in greeting to the three officers.

Yomai: It’s great to meet you Commander. ::To Edrei and Koyama respectively:: Doctor, Ensign.

Edrei: Nice to meet you. I think we have a lot of things to talk about.

Koyama: response

T’Ama: I guess we’ll start with, what are the symptoms of this disease and how is it transmitted?

Jin nodded and then pressed a button on his console to send over the relevant data on the pandemic they’ve gathered so far.

Yomai: The disease is an airborne pathogen that primarily affects the respiratory system. So far we know that patients will be asymptomatic for the first week before symptoms start. It starts off with coughing, shortness of breath and exhaustion. The majority of cases keep these symptoms until recovery however, some patients will experience sudden respiratory failure and pass on before we can stabilize them.

Edrei: ::quietly, to T'Ama and Koyama:: At first glance it doesn't seem to fit our latest epidemic.

Dr. Yomai raised an eyebrow at the doctor’s secret remarks. He’d prefer any insights the officers had would be shared with him too.

Koyama/T'Ama: response

Edrei: What's the timeline on this epidemic, from when you estimate the index case was infected and were made aware of it to the quarantine?

Yomai: We detected the first cases about three weeks ago and symptoms appeared one week later. After the first patient death one week ago we immediately began partial quarantine measures. As of three days ago we have implemented a full quarantine.

That was too long to take action in his mind, but who was he to disrupt the tourists.

Koyama/T'Ama: Response

Edrei: So we might have a window of opportunity to act on it strongly here.

Yomai: Our hope is that once you can get a medical team down here you can find a way to fabricate a vaccine for the pathogen. Our research facility is at your disposal.

Not that the Waleth had anything a Federation vessel would need. But he at least wanted to extend a gesture of cooperation.

Koyama/T'Ama: Response

Yomai: We have some samples for you to examine yourself once you arrive at the facility. I’d send them over but sadly we cannot risk the pathogen getting off the planet.

Edrei/T’Ama/Koyama: Response

Yomai: When will we expect you to arrive?

T’ama: Response

He nodded as he took notes on his PADD.

Yomai: I’ll have my team get whatever you need. Any requests?

T’Ama/Edrei/Koyama: Response
