((Chief of Operations Office, Operations Center - Upper Level, Deck 6, USS Octavia E Butler))

Avander was comfortable in the office of the COO. He had even been given some sort of drink with ginger and cherry. It was quite nice, a bit of sweetness with a mild snap of an additional kick.

His host, while gracious, seemed a bit distracted. Avander started with a banal opener and the Chief brought up the topic of interpersonal issues in his department.

Promontory: Oh? Tell me more about that.

Arlill: Well, ::sitting down:: I’ve found, over the past few months, that Mr. Nilsen has been a bit overzealous in his role as Assistant Chief. So much so that I moved him to another shift.

Promontory: (smiling and letting out a little chuckle) Huh. I can definitely see Mr. Nilsen being overzealous. And having the Chief and Assistant on different shifts just makes sense—share the leadership, but is there a bigger concern there?

Arlill: I mean, I’m all for officers stepping up and shining (beat) I guess what I’ve found perplexing is his lack of respect for the command structure within the OC.

Avander raised a brow at that. Overeager, for sure, but he had never known the junior lieutenant to be insubordinate.

Promontory: He’s been causing issues in Ops?

Avander hadn’t seen any indication of that, either in reports or in the department’s performance, but that’s why he did these check-ins, to get a sense for what else was happening below the surface.

Arlill: Oh, nothing that would cause major operational problems—just small challenges to my authority.

Avander eyed the bearded blue man carefully.

Promontory: Anything particularly concerning?

They had Mr. Nilsen slated for promotion, but if it should be held back, he wanted to know before the awards ceremony.

Arlill: Response

Promontory: I see. (beat) How about yourself, how are you doing?

Department leaders had to take care of everyone on their staff. The XO, in turn, had to take care of them.

Arlill: Response

Promontory: Fair enough.

He waited a moment to see if the lieutenant had anything more to add.

Promontory: Well, if that’s it…

Arlill: Response
