((USS Octavia E Butler - Sickbay, Deck 5))

The room was empty. For the first time since Martha came aboard the Butler she was the only person available. She could dispense medicine and diagnose injuries and be right every time. Because there was no one there to oversee what she was doing. Oh, what a glorious day! She could use the machines all on her own. No one to issue orders or step up to show her how to do something.

Martha straightened her back, gently rubbed her imaginary two solid gold pips and the caduceus on her collar. Well, the caduceus was there because she was assigned to the sickbay as an aid. Nurse Aid!

After meeting the group in the holodeck for a quick round of Clue - the game that started on earth and became more of an in person mystery on the  ship. (She was going to play Mrs. White next time.) After that, she would settle down and start her studies in ernest to become a real nurse. Like Nurse Miash who was almost a doctor. Martha’s imagination ran with the idea. She’d become head nurse when Nurse Miash was transferred to another ship. Smiling broadly, Aid Wing would be Somebody.

Computer: Please state the nature of the medical emergency.

Nurse Aid Wing jumped, her heart beating fast, her stomach doing a fast flip and flop. Scared that she’d been caught pretending to be a real nurse, Martha looked around, eyes wide with fright. Turning in a slow circle, she didn’t see anyone. That awful feeling of anxiety tickled at her chest. She hated that feeling. But no, there was no one there.

Once again, her imagination had come alive. It seemed to do that all the time.

She was truly alone in sickbay. Oh, yes, there were doctors and nurses available in other rooms but she was alone here. Right here. In sickbay. Empty bio beds, darkened machines. Gradually, her anxiety dissipated. Once again Martha strode around the room, holding two -no, three- imaginary padds. She would diagnose, medicate and send the injured party back to their duties.

Her elation dimmed when a real nurse entered the room. Studying a padd, the nurse approached the nearest bio bed monitor, tapping at the padd quickly, she touched the readout and moved on to the next bed.

Aid Wing’s imagination settled back into it’s shell and she continued her original duty of inventorying the room.
