Ensign Tili and Lieutenant Jania Nis - A very late onboarding

Tili arrived at sickbay for her first official day onboard the USS Octavia E. Butler, although technically her first day as a nurse happened a few weeks back by tending to a Dosi. She felt a bit nervous, but mostly excited to get started as she stepped into sickbay. The other nurses and doctors were going about their work, examining patients and sorting prescriptions. Tili gave some of them a friendly wave as she beelineed to the chief medical officer's office, and stopped just before the door. 

oO Okay, Tili. This is it, just relax and don’t say or do anything stupid….Oo 

She took a deep breath and buzzed the door. 

Jania had been expecting the appointment, but she’d gotten distracted by PADDwork as usual. 

Nis: Come in. 

Tili: Ensign Tili, I’m your new nurse. 

Nis: :: smiling :: Yes, we know. We heard about your actions during the last mission. 

She took a seat at the desk as old Troyian etiquette made her keep her back straight, attentive.    

Tili: Yes, the head nurse sent me to handle the Dosi. 

Nis: Good work. We were able to save them because of you and Commander Katsim’s quick thinking with Vuq. :: shaking her head :: Not that they seemed to care. We didn’t get a single thank you from the lot. 

Tili: It's fine, I don’t do it for the fame…

 

Jania giggled. 

Nis: You’ve been here a few weeks now, haven’t you? We’ve been meaning to sit down with you for a bit now but, you know, between being trapped in a weird dome and having a scalpel to my neck … then my brother … ah, sorry, just trying to explain why we haven’t met before. All apologies. Anyway, how are you settling in?

Tili: That's alright, Ma’am. I’ve been settling in all right, and didn't have much to unpack….

Tili had only taken the bare essentials with her, including her toothbrush and a few pairs of civilian clothing for off-duty stuff. 

At this, Jania nodded thoughtfully. She had met plenty of doctors and nurses who threw themselves right into the work, never taking a break. Maybe she was one herself. But she was definitely a “do as we say, not as we do” style of boss; nurses were expected to take their accrued leave whether they wanted to or not. Nurses were expected to get off the ship sometimes, too. 

Nis: Well, we’ve got some time before the next mission, so if you need a few hours off from a shift to get organised, feel free to take it. 

Tili: Thank you, Ma’am. 

Nis: What do you like to do for fun? 

Tili: Besides Medicine…dancing, singing, and poetry.

Nis: That’s a good interest in the arts. We’re glad to hear you have hobbies besides medicine. It’s important for your mental health. 

Tili: Well, I do like to learn new things. 

Tili was interested in other hobbies, such as something called rugby. She only read a snippet about it at the academy, but not a lot on how to play.   

Nis: Awesome. Us too. You might want to get with Riley Delar. He knows a few musicians on the ship. 

Tili: Really, I’ll keep that in mind. 

Nis: As for poetry, you should look into something called JOPA. -We- can’t tell you what it is, but maybe Nurse Assata will spill the beans. :: drumming her fingers :: What else? Hmm. Pasta night’s on Tuesdays. If you’re on night shift, always make sure to leave a piece of bread for the gremlin. And if a patient is being creepy or handsy, Replicator 2 has been known to ‘accidentally’ dump capsaicin into cough syrups. 

Tili: Um, r-right. 

Nis: It’s a good ship. We think you’ll be happy here. But if you’re not happy, for any reason, let us know. Welcome aboard even though you’ve already been aboard. 

Tili: I will, thank you. :: Getting up. :: If it's okay with you, I’d like to get started.

Nis: We’d love that. :: pointing firmly :: But … don’t work too hard, okay? 

Tili turned towards the door, but stopped just before the threshold. 

Tili: Um, which one is Nurse Assata? 

Jania bit her lip. 

Nis: :: whispering :: The one with the haircut from 2380.
