((Conference Room, Deck 5, USS Octavia E Butler))

Nilsen: So when we beamed down the Kings Path mine, I opened my mouth and then we got captured as slaves.

He saw Martinson's attempt at maintaining a straight face, it seemed like this guy might approach things in much the same way as him. Of course, it had been too early to tell at that point. Taggart, on the other hand, hadn't laughed, he didn't seem to show any emotion.

Lhandon had never thought of himself as analytical, he had left that for other officers but he noticed people, and he had thought to himself that it might have been best to lay off that particular flavor of humor for the time being.

For Taggart had a look that said his experience hadn't ended so well.

Taggart: How did you get out? Rescue, or escape?

But he also noticed the purple piping of the diplomatic corp.

Martinson: It was a pretty impromptu rescue from my understanding. ::looking to Nilsen:: The real question is how'd you get to that point?

At that moment, as he was speaking, Lhandon had another thought, unrelated to the current topic but one he would ponder about long after the meeting was over. Would purple suit him?

Nilsen: I mean there’s a little more to it than that ::laughs:: As it turns out they had no intention of listening to us. It was their plan all along to try and take us.

He wondered how much of the rescue was known, everything after his broadcast was a blur.

Taggart: So it was bait? To get their hands on Starfleet personnel.

Nilsen: Yeah pretty much, they just wanted more slaves and our gear.

Martinson: Right, well, that's why we're here. We need to work on first contact, so to speak, when it comes to any time of negotiations.

Taggart: Alright. I'm in.....

Nilsen: Let's do this.

Martinson had a plan. The two were willing to go along, so it was show time

Martinson: Good. So, I'm going to observe and I'll stop you if or when I see something that goes off. So, Mister Taggart, you'll be a representative from a non-Federation allied planet. Your planet has substantial deposits of duranium ore, you don't have a use for it, but you know the Federation does. And you're here to sell the rights to it.

Taggart: response

Martinson: And Lhando, you are, of course, the Federation representative. You've been requested to talk to secure rights to mine. The Federation has given you broad discretion as to what you can offer short of outright membership.

Nilsen: Oh erm. Okay

He hadn't expected this sudden role-play; if that had been the case, he would have been tempted to suggest the holodeck or a game of Dungeons and Dragons 26th edition.

Martinson: Okay then, have at it.

It took Lhandon a moment to get into it. He spoke first.

Nilsen: er…erm. I am Lt Lhandon Joseph Nilsen. I am the representative for the United Federation of Planets. We are here to discuss terms and secure rights to the duranium ore. Now let's start by being honest with each other.

Taggart/Martinson response

Nilsen: Ah okay, that's how I started the King's Path talk, I wanna talk about that after this ::to Taggart:: Hold on, sorry mate, bare with me. Okay back in the game. ::back to the roleplay:: Why don't you tell me about the mine? Maybe how your people came about it?

Taggart/Martinson response

He figured that he needed information and that could have gotten them back on track, and he also figured that he needed to cut to the chase. Of course, the facts of the case had been up in the air, this had been a made-up hypothetical for the exercise. For all that mattered, they could have said that the Duranium was sold in a thin aluminum can, and when drunk, it could have given you wings.

Nilsen: And are we the only ones you’ve contacted so far?

He glanced at Martinson as if to say, "You meant like this, right?" He looked for that tiny bit of reassurance that he indeed intended for the two to engage in this roleplay activity.

Taggart/Martinson response

He soon warmed up. This was almost like his D&D games. If only he had had some armor, a shield, a sword, and the ability to cast divine smite, then he would have been a little more comfortable. A thought Lhandon had had in the past was the idea of replicating such a suit of armour.

Maybe that will give him the edge in further negotiations.
