((The town center, New Faren, New Bajor))
The opportunity to participate in a festival was not one to be missed. While Fer’at did not condescend to stating he actually enjoyed such things, he would acquiesce that they were agreeable. The main draw wasn’t the brightly coloured banners, nor the tantalising food, or even the plethora of entertainment. Instead, he thought it a good opportunity to observe a culture that was thousands upon thousands of years old manifest itself on a planet that had only been relatively recently populated. That, and there was a tea he found quite agreeable and he wished to procure more of it.
When others agreed to go down, he followed along, for it seemed illogical to use resources of the ship separately when doing so together was more efficient. Upon their arrival, however, both Loq and Yinn, two others who had joined him, began to act strangely . At first, Fer’at wondered if it was some sort of reaction to the transporter, and at that thought, Nilsen elected to investigate a possible cause. In the meantime, the Vulcan felt another course of action might be prudent.
Fer’at: If it would be beneficial, I am certain we can find some place to sit and rest for a moment until you are feeling more…normal.
Loq: Yes. Let's sit. Have a kava juice. Clear my head a little.
Before they could move in earnest, Yinn tumbled forward, her limbs flailing about, and when Loq moved to intercept, he simply fell over. With eyebrows arched upward, Fer’at crouched down beside the two officers.
Fer'at: Are you injured?
Loq: I'm okay. I mean, I'm not okay at all, but I'm not hurt, but—
Yinn: I'm having trouble controlling my limbs. And I—
Neither finished their sentence and Fer’at glanced between the two, both collapsed upon the ground, and some of the crowd stopped to stare at them. Briefly, the Vulcan searched for any recogniseable first responders in the area, but did not see any. Currently, neither crew member was in any condition to stand to get to a first aid tent which most likely existed somewhere on the premises. Thus, the only conclusion was they needed to beam back to the ship. Before he could tap his combadge to call the Octavia E. Butler, however, both Yinn and Loq lifted their heads, both sets of eyes coming to rest upon him.
Loq: Fer'at... I think...
He paused and did not finish, but seemed to have more to say except it wasn’t Loq who said it.
Yinn: ...I'm both Qurgh'Loq and Yinn.
The Vulcan paused, and a third voice joined in, this time with a request, though an unnecessary one.
Brzezinski: I’m sorry, say that again?
Fer’at: I believe they said they are both Qurgh’Loq and Yinn.
The sight of the new arrival seemed to have invigorated Loq’yinn, for they called out to her as soon as they recognised her.
Loq: Rivka! You can help me. Help me understand this.
Yinn: I don't know how to explain... but... I can remember growing up on Bolarus and growing up on Hitorah.
First one spoke, then the other, switching back and forth. It was a rather confusing scenario, certainly, but Fer’at focused on the idea they had communicated - that they were not just one, but two, individuals, yet one entity, two minds merged, but still with two bodies.
Loq: I worked with you in the science lab on the Brzenski phantoms and why they reacted to chronitons. Remember what an ordeal it was moving those chronitons over from the Moo?
Shifting slightly, Fer’at carefully studied the man and woman. On the surface they looked every bit themselves, with no discernable differences, but obviously something had occurred. That something was, evidently, a combination of the two, though not in the same way as Tuvix of Voyager had been. No, this was something else entirely.
Fer’at: So you are now the same person?
Yinn: I don't know, but I'm starting to work out a theory. Fer'at, are Vulcans ever able to mind-meld without physical contact? Has anyone ever gotten stuck in a mind-meld long-term? That's what this feels like.
Fer’at: Fascinating.
Brzezinski: What?
Fer’at turned and eyed the woman who had suddenly elected to join them. He recognised her as Rivka Brzezinski, a rather odd and eclectic female in the science department, but Fer’at wondered if she needed to go to sickbay for a hearing test.
Fer’at: It sounds as if the two have somehow been combined, retaining their original bodies, but with both minds merged and somehow occupying both bodies at the same time, if I understand what they are saying.
Loq/Yinn: responses
Normally, Fer’at would have a scanner with him, but he was not on duty, and he had dressed in civilian clothing, thus did not have such a device with him. On the other hand, Brzezinski was on a mission to scan as many brains as possible, and he suspected that might very well be the reason why she was on the planet. It was a fortuitous happenstance, because it allowed her to do what she did best - scan their brains.
Brzezinski: Hmph. Elevated Beta-waves. (beat) I think we need to get you to the labs for more analysis!
Yinn: Agreed. But do not beam us up. Whatever happened could be undone, or made worse. I'd like the chance to study the effects first.
Fer’at: Hm. The most logical thing to do would be to return to the ship, though Sickbay might be the better choice.
Which meant their trip would be cut short. Despite the disagreeableness of that though, Fer’at would not linger when fellow officers were distressed.
Brzezinkski/Loq/Yinn: responses
Fer’at: That may be so, but logically, they would benefit under a medical officer’s care.
The Vulcan eyed the neuroscientist with a critical eye. Everyone knew that she was obsessed with brains and found every reason in the galaxy to seek them out for study. In this case, while a study of Yinn and Loq might prove interesting, it was far more logical to involve a medical doctor and not just a neuroscientist who everyone thought needed her own brain scanned.
Brzezinski/Loq/Yinn: responses
Fer’at: Then it would be best if Loq and Yinn make the choice, as the condition is theirs to bear.
He turned his attention to the two affected officers, both eyebrows arched upward in inquiry.
