(( Conference Room 04-118, Deck 4, Deep Space 14 ))

As if her presence was conjured by invoking her name, Commodore V’Airu had joined the captains of her taskforce. Well, Captains and a Commander, for now.

Captain Jnaxlo Kruwii appreciated the efforts towards a ritual hazing, but as so often was the case when trying to tease someone of keen intelligence and potential, Commander Rouiancet had sussed out the purpose of the meeting relatively quickly.

Nevertheless, they were not quite ready to completely dispense with the façade just yet.

Kruwii: Well, not quite. There’s a bit more…

He looked at the others for confirmation that the time was right.

V'Airu: With which we can proceed.

Fletcher: We really are beating around the bush.

Kruwii: Time then, for the final test!

T’Valek: Indeed

Rouiancet: I don't understand. Is there something more?

T’Valek: Well, Commander, can you tell us what your goals are for the future?

Rhyl: oO The final test. Oo

The lone commander seemed to reflect for a moment too long.

Fletcher: Well?

Rouiancet: I've found command to be a rewarding and challenging experience thus far. Despite my unorthodox path to becoming the Butler's CO, I believe that I've done well in the post, and have assembled a strong and supportive staff. I would like to continue that work. I've found great personal purpose in the exploratory work of this task force, and I want to continue to seek out greater and greater questions. (a slight smile) I serve at the behest of curiosity.

Fletcher: Well that sounds like a goal well aligned with the Flotilla.

Jnaxlo looked around the room. Those who commanded ships in the flotilla were often on their own in an unexplored sector of space. He himself had just come back from an initial survey of what they were colloquially calling ‘the worselands’ (or ‘the badder lands’), but at any rate, there was a lot more to explore out here.

T’Valek/Rhyl: Responses

Kruwii: No more tests, then?

The Rigelian endomale wanted to see the human candidate squirm a little more.

Fletcher: I think we’ve heard enough.  She’s onto us, we might as well get started.

It was time for the official recognition and the assembled captains rose for the ceremony. Captain Flether took the pip box and held it aloft with some appropriate pomp.

Fletcher: Commander Lia Rouiancet.  You are hereby called to the position of Captain of the Starship Octavia E. Butler.  As such, you are charged with exploration of the unknown and keeping to the standards and philosophies of the Federation.  Do you swear to honour and abide by them?

Rouiancet: (solemn) I will, and I do.

Kruwii: The weight of a captaincy is more than the command of a vessel. You are to embody moral leadership, diplomacy, and mentorship while inspiring your crew and representing our ideals.

Jnaxlo was proud of that little speech. These sorts of things always seemed to require that each established captain give a little spiel and the computer on the Vulcana Regar had helped him brainstorm a few lines. It probably wouldn’t have exactly inspired confidence in his XO if he had asked her for inspirational words about being a captain.

T’Valek/Rhyl: Responses

Captain Fletcher held the pip box higher as she continued to administer the charge.

Fletcher: As a captain, your duty is not only to the Federation, but also to your crew.  Do you swear to lead by example, and take care of all who are under your jurisdiction, to encourage and exhort to the high standards as befitting a Starfleet officer, and to ensure discipline and respect are given to all.

T’Valek/Rhyl/Rouiancet: Response

Fletcher: And finally, do you swear to honour and respect all people with whom you come into contact with, to abide by the Prime Directive, and ensure peaceful relations throughout the galaxy.

Kruwii: Or as best as you can!

Despite their collective desire for peace, peace was not always to be found.

T’Valek/Rhyl/Rouiancet: Response

The box emptied, Captain Fletcher passed it to Jnaxlo, who stashed it on the window sill behind him before turning back to watch the pip-pinning.

Fletcher: I hereby declare that Commander Lia Rouiancet has been promoted to the rank of captain, and is hereby afforded all the rights and privileges of that position.  Captain Lia Rouiancet, please recite your Captain’s Oath for the Octavia E. Butler.

Rouiancet: Response

Fletcher: Attention!

At the sound, Jnaxlo snapped to attention with the others and followed Captain Fletcher in an ancient and rarely used symbol, the salute.

Kruwii: Captain!

He addressed the newest person who could be addressed by the title. Ready to respond the same in return.

T’Valek/Rhyl/Rouiancet: Response

Captain Fletcher ended the salute and moved on to more important business.

Fletcher: Now it’s time to party!

T’Valek/Rhyl: /Rouiancet: Response

Kruwii: I believe the traditional indulgence is fermented fruit drinks!

Rhyl/Fletcher/Rouiancet/T’Valek: Responses

Jnaxlo made his way to the front of the crowd and extended an open palm, a Terran tradition that had spread throughout the Federation and had become a sign of coming in peace.

Kruwii: Congratulations again. We need more Captains out here.

Rhyl/Fletcher/Rouiancet/T’Valek: Responses

Kruwii: All in all, a good meeting of the Command Officers Promotion Association!
