So the man that was known as the ships XO was leaving to take command of his very own ship. A man that her father appeared to have befriended. He always seemed to do that. After all, he had befriended the former XO of SB118, a man Milly remembered well. Mr Theo and her father had been particularly close friends, much like he had been with Uncle Sal. And Aunt Mirra, Aunt Alora and of course Mr Ishreth amongst others.
Her fathers warm and friendly nature – despite his new and battered appearance – had always ensured that Milly had been surrounded by the very best of people her entire life.
Growing up amongst such wonderful people had also instilled a strong sense of right and wrong, an inquisitive mind and a knack of judging the nature of people far older than her own twelve years would suggest.

Milly: Well I'm sure you'll be really good at it!

Mr Etan appeared to flush a little at the compliment.

Etan: Thank you, Milly. That’s kind of you to say.

Rummaging around in her pack for some flapjack, and offering a piece she then set off into the trees once again.

Milly: I'll show you why I'm out here.

As they returned to her little spot, Milly smiled down at the picture of her grandfather.

Etan: Who is this?

Milly: This is my Grand-da, William.

Looking down at the photograph, Milly's smile broadened. She missed him so very much, but once again a maturity beyond her age blossomed forth. She wasn't sad her grandfather was gone, because she was so very glad to have had the chance to know him.

Etan: Ahh, yes. :: he replied. :: You’re Da often talks about him.

Looking up at Mr Etan, Milly gave a nod.

Milly: Daddy misses him very much. ::Glancing about as if expecting there to be other people around, Milly lowered her voice a little.:: Sometimes, back when we lived aboard 118, I'd hear daddy crying when he thought I was asleep.

Milly looked at the photo, then back up again with a look of “you can't tell him I said that”.
Mr Etan looked back at the photograph before bowing his head a moment.

Etan: Walk with The Prophets, William Maxwell. :: he opened his eyes and looked back at Milly. :: Tell me about him.

Milly: I think you would have liked him.

As best as she could, Milly recounted her Grand-da's career. All about his numerous ribbons and science awards, about how he was the first Maxwell in their branch of the family to become a Lieutenant-Commander, about how deeply he loved Milly's Grandmama. Of the happy times in the family home in Scotland, and of visiting her many many relations in Italy. She glazed over his sudden illness and passing, as it was everything that had gone before that was important.

Etan: response

Milly: I have a picture.

Rummaging in her pack again, Milly pulled out her PADD and thumbed it on. Skipping through some of her files she pulled up a picture of her grandparents from about a year before her Grand'da's passing. He struck a handsome figure in a smart tux, broad smile cutting across his face as he gazed adoringly at the woman beside him. Her long hair was as dark as the day they had both met, and from pictures Milly had seen her Grandmama was almost as youthful and certainly just as beautiful as the older images.
She offered the PADD to Mr Etan.

Etan: response

Milly beamed and nodded.

Milly: She's the prettiest lady in the whole galaxy!

She certainly had been to William.
Which reminded Milly that she was due to call her Grandmama this evening. Her weekly call wasn't until tomorrow, but her father would be home all night tonight so it was a secret call to surprise him with.

Etan: response

Milly cocked her head slightly as she regarded the officer in front of her.

Milly: What about your family, Mr Etan?

Etan: response
