Of late, there were two main reasons Jania paced the corridors of the Butler: Someone was dying somewhere, or she was headed to the gym to do some climbing. But in this case, she had a third purpose: With a book in one hand and a sandwich in the other, she was planning on heading to the holodeck. As a girl, she liked to read on a small cliff face on the edge of the Urot Mountains overlooking the Uzonn Ocean. While on Deep Space 14, she’d acquired a holodeck program that a rather shady Ferengi salesman had promised her would replicate the view exactly.
Her hopes would be dashed shortly.
Before that, though, it was her sandwich that was dashed against her chest as she walked directly into a crew member.
Maxwell: Ooft! Sorry about that. Wasnae paying attention. You alright?
Nis: :: Staring down sadly at the bits of sandwich clinging to her uniform :: Fine. We’re sure it was our fault.
Jania was a special kind of clumsy--frequently distracted and accident-prone, but well-balanced. She was usually able to save herself from the worst of the embarrassment she caused. Although she managed to slam right into Maxwell, she caught herself and ended up in a wide stance.
Maxwell: Good, good. Am no sure if we've met? ::He offered his hand.:: I'm Max.
Nis: Oh, hello sir. We’re Jania Nis. Medical.
Except for the Klingons, Maxwell was one of the more intimidating people Jania had met aboard the ship. The way he carried himself, he was obviously a seasoned marine, a lifestyle Jania had vague, ancient memories of but not much interest in emulating. Based on his appearance and posture, he looked like someone she might meet in sickbay one of these days.
Maxwell: Are ye new aboard, or have we just no bumped intae each other before?
Nis: Trust us, if we weren’t new, we’d have bumped into you by now. We … tend to run into people a lot.
She picked sandwich particles off her uniform.
Maxwell: Response
Nis: Wait, are you the one with the cat?! He was hanging out in medical a bit ago actually. He’s a real cutie.
The cat had been very popular in medical, so much so that he’d run away when two of the nurses started to argue about who would get to give him scritchy-scratches next.
Maxwell: Response
Nis: We were just headed to the holodeck. We bought a program that is supposed to replicate any part of Trill perfectly. That’s where we’re from.
Maxwell: Response.
Jania sighed, thinking of her suburban hometown, and her parents’ little house by the cliffs. It had been a hot, muggy climate, but the cliffs wouldn’t have felt all that alien to Maxwell.
Nis: Well, I wouldn’t say homesick, but … Maybe a little homesick. This is my first time offworld. Nis has been around quite a bit, but not me. Are you from Earth?
Maxwell: Response
