((Counsellor’s Office, Deck Five, USS Octavia E. Butler))
Stendhal: Do you like tea?
She had a kindly manner about her, she had a calmness that resonated – putting others at ease. It was a talent and one definitely best employed in her current role.
Xaivis: I do but I’m more of a coffee man actually, if you have one.
Stendhal: Oh, coffee! That sounds like a great idea. I'll have a nice cup of coffee myself this time.
Karen pondered for a moment the differences between a barista and a counselor. Not many, really. Both professions involved talking to clients and providing emotional and psychological support.
After a few minutes, she returned with a tray laden with two small cups, a Moka pot, and a set for offering milk and sugar separately.
Xaivis: Well, basically I’m here so you can assess if I’m psychologically fit for duty. ::He smiled:: but I’d not force a snap – it’s always best to gather some intel and plan.
Stendhal: Well you look fine to me! Anyway, let me know what you think about this and tell me a bit about yourself, just to make sure we're on the same page and to get things in order.
Xaivis: Perhaps I should start at the very beginning…I was born on Terra Nova. I don’t know if you know much about it but, even being so close to Earth, it has a very complex history and quite a harsh climate in places…half of the planet is still broadly uninhabitable.
Stendhal: Well, it doesn't exactly look like a place I'd choose for a vacation!
Karen remarked, making a mock grimace.
Xaivis: Exactly, so it’s not exactly a thriving world…a lot of people work the land or are involved in the reclamation.
Karen poured the coffee for both of them, for herself she added nothing else, not even a grain of sugar.
Stendhal: Sugar? Milk? I should add that milk would nullify the beneficial effects of coffee's antioxidants and also make it a bit indigestible, but many people like it with milk, right? After all, tastes are tastes.
Karen observed Xaivis’s reaction; the apparent futility of the conversation was her way, let’s say, of tuning in to the frequencies and assessing the person in front of her. After all, simple things formed the foundation of interpersonal relationships.
Xaivis: ?
She sped up a bit with the questions, just to see if her new mate would show some emotional reactions.
Stendhal: Do you miss your home planet, even if it’s mostly uninhabitable?
Xaivis: ?
Stendhal: Are you okay with that? Would you like to discuss what happened?
Xaivis: ?
