(( Chief Engineer's Office, Deck 11, USS Octavia E Butler ))
As Valk, Forsyth, and Rouiancet, took their seats; he glanced up and down the Vulcan. He’d accepted a request to review the man’s background, which he decided to do in person so that he could also check how well he’d fit in with the vibe of the Butler. New folks tended to be wild cards; though Vulcans admittedly less so.
Herrick: (looking at Valk) It’s a pleasure to meet you; I'm the cheng of this boat, Lieutenant Josh Herrick. How are you finding the Butler so far?
Forsyth: It's been great, sir.
Valk: The Butler has proven to be the most accommodating vessel, Sir.
Herrick: Well, we’re always glad to roll out the purple carpet to folks who are angling to help us out here in the GQ. ::grabbing a PADD from the credenza behind him:: And Valk, freighter folk always seem to have a knack for being able to improvise.
He recalled their former second officer’s sister who had assisted him from being blown to pieces when the ‘Oumuamua’s mission pod exploded. Josh still found the circumstances around that event mysterious.
Valk: Indeed, I have been wanting to put my engineering skills to use.
Forsyth: I-I think this could also be a great way for him to learn about his father's career as well, He has been wondering what Starfleet is like.
Rouiancet: ::holding her palms up:: Hold on, please. Mister -- Valk? (a glance at Josh, then back to Valk) Why do you want to crew a Federation starship?
It was a good question and one Valk should be answering, not Alex. It certainly was not for the money and he didn’t assume that the man would be chasing the creature comforts that Sagan class afforded.
Valk: I served as an engineering technician on the Vulcan freighter Yarahla under Captain T’Ven.
Herrick: Yes but… logically speaking, you could get Starfleet exposure anywhere there’s a Federation outpost or shipyard. Why the Butler?
He flicked his eyes back and forth between the ensign and the Vulcan, his eyes lingering as he entertained the thought that they had some similar features.
Forsyth/Valk: Responses
Rouiancet: Yes, that's exactly what I mean.
He wasn’t alone in inspecting the two men as the captain did, as well as offering the chief engineer a raised eyebrow.
Forsyth/Valk: Responses
That seemed a satisfactory-enough answer, and it seemed to satisfy the captain though she wasn’t done her digging yet.
Rouiancet: Oh, I see. Well, I don't see any difficulties, though (beat; considering the pair) I am curious how you two came up with this plan. Why not crew a ship of your own?
Forsyth/Valk: Responses
Josh wondered exactly how much capital was needed to buy a vessel, but they were correct in that it wouldn’t offer them the rigor that Starfleet provided.
Herrick: And how versed are you in our protocols and tech?
He debated who he’d pair Valk up with for the next month as he got his legs onboard; Johnson seemed the obvious fit. She’d made Josh feel welcome when he’d come aboard and tended to have a more positive influence on the crew. And, there was TK, who Josh would pull in if the man had trouble ‘adapting’. And then there was Morro and Kimonzi… perhaps a blend of officers would suit him well.
Rouiancet/Forsyth/Valk: Response
Herrick: (looking to the Captain) So a trial basis for 3 months, and see how it goes?
Rouiancet/Forsyth/Valk: Response
Herrick: (smiling) Well, I would expect nothing less; it’s important that we be the right fit for you as much as you are for us. (Beat) You said your dad was in Starfleet?
Rouiancet/Forsyth/Valk: Response
