((Bridge, Deck 1, U.S.S. Octavia E. Butler))
Percy, Lahl, and Varik were great at what they did. Percy was the chief of operations; he had been an operations officer since 2396, when he started as an HCO on the USS St. Albans, before he specialised as an LCARS management and system administration specialist two years later. Lahl possessed a wealth of experience not just from her symbiont but also from her own training, and she was the chief engineer. Varik had been an experienced tactical officer on both the Atlantis and the Chin'Toka before he came over to the OEB.
Jer-Legrand: Shall I?
Yet with that experience between them, none of them had ever been in command.
Lahl was happy for Percy to take the call.
Lahl: It’s all yours.
Jer-Legrand: This is the Federation Starship, Octavia E. Butler. What is your purpose here?
Lahl: =/\=::typing from the Captain’s chair to Captain Rouiancet:: Captain, we need you on the bridge. We have made contact with the mercenary ship. =/\=
Incoming Vessel: What is your purpose here?
o0 Really? 0o it was not the response Percy was expecting.
Varik/Ojotha: Responses
Lahl: We are here on an exploratory mission. Again, we ask, what is your purpose here?
Incoming Vessel: We are also here on an exploratory mission. What a coincidence that we are both here for that purpose.
The Bajoran hadn't liked the tone of that. There had been a smile and smirk from their image on the viewscreen, as if they knew something that Percy and his crew didn't. Lahl had had something in mind to discuss, so Percy had given way.
Varik: Responses
Lahl: What do you mean you’re here on an “exploratory mission”? We both know that’s not true. You’ve already attacked the archaeologists down on the surface once already.
Incoming Vessel: You call it attacking, we call it exploring. Same same.
It was not. Lahl was clearly annoyed by this, and Percy had half expected her to grab an EVA suit and head over to that ship to hit the captain of that vessel over the head with several mallets.
Jer-Legrand: Captain::to the incoming vessel**::** your actions on the surface suggest otherwise.
Varik: Responses
Lahl: Absolutely not "Same same." Exploratory missions don't involve weapons and explosives.
Incoming Vessel: So then, I should assume that if we scan your ship, you'll have no offensive capabilities?
Jer-Legrand: I assure you our defensive capabilities are for precisely that - defence. We have no hostile intentions toward your vessel. However, your actions on the surface suggest otherwise. Perhaps we could find a more… ::looking for the words:: diplomatic approach to resolve our mutual interests?

But they had been inexperienced. They had done what, on review, would have been the right thing, and it was the thing that all the Starfleet manuals said to do. They had investigated the incoming vessel to protect their people on the ground, and they had put forward the diplomatic option, but it seemed that the visitors were just there to talk, and the B-Team had not known that they were pawns in a game of chess.
As if politely saying, "excuse me," Percy held out his hand slightly. His French accent came through just a little bit with the Federation Standard - just a little more than normal.
Jer-Legrand: Let me be clear, Captain. We are a Starfleet vessel on a sanctioned mission.
Lahl/Varik/Incoming Vessel: Response
Percy felt a knot tightening in his stomach. What if his inexperience led them into a situation they couldn't handle? He didn’t wake up this morning with a plan to be on the bridge, making command decisions. His eyes darted between the viewscreen and the console, searching for guidance that wasn't there.
Jer-Legrand: I suggest we arrange a meeting rather than escalate this confrontation. We have no desire for conflict.
