((Chief of Operations Office, Operations Center - Upper Level, Deck 6, USS Octavia E Butler))

This was probably why the XO was supposed to have regular 1:1’s with department heads. Already, Avander had learned a few new things about Toxin and the Ops Department. For one, it seemed that one of the promising junior lieutenants (and assistant chiefs) was a little overanxious for Mr. Arlill’s liking. Toxin, himself, however, expressed his own anxieties for a promotion beyond department chief.

Avander had suggested he start with the command training program, including putting in some volunteer work with the Academy, helping new recruits. It had been one of Avander’s most rewarding experiences with command training. But for now, there was still a lot that could be done to demonstrate leadership.

Promontory: I think the best thing you can focus on for now is helping your staff. The most important trait in a leader is helping those below them to make it. Henri: oO I’m sorry, what does he think you’ve been doing?! Oo

Toxin appeared to let the words sink-in before he responded. Avander took the time to glance around the office. It was fine, but could use a little more personality. Then again, perhaps he needed to step-up his own office’s décor before making notes on others.

Arlill: ::visibly pausing for a moment:: I’m not sure I’ve ever put my staff as anything but a priority of my focus. (beat) I guess I just don’t want to lose sight of what’s next.

Henri: oO Maybe you're not being hard enough on yourself. You've accomplished a lot already, but that’s obviously not enough for them. Oo

Arlill: I know I've been doing well here, but... (beat) I can't help feeling like I'm stagnating. Like I should be pushing for more.

Promontory: You've been chief for, what, like half a year? Give it time. I don’t think you’re stagnating at all. (beat) But if you want to get on the command track, that’s open as well. (thinking about the recent events at Sol) There’s plenty of opportunities and they’ll need good officers going forward.

Arlill: (sighing) You're right, of course. I suppose I just need to focus on the present and trust that the future will come.

Avander smiled at that.

Promontory: It often does!

Arlill: I appreciate your advice, Commander. I'll give some thought to that command training program you mentioned.

Promontory: Absolutely. When you’re ready to start a more formal process, we can chat again. Until then, we’ll keep our eyes on you!

Arlill: Response [if wanted]
