((OOC: There is a link to a Youtube video in this sim to show something, it contains massive spoilers for Picard Series 3))

Yinn: I know why that part of the cloud is denser. I'm getting stronger gravimetric readings in that area of space. But I'm not seeing anything with enough mass to cause that.

The parallels between this mission to find the USS Unity Dow and his very first mission in the Esh-o Micro-nebula were getting harder to miss. The first time he sat at the helm of the Oumuamua, he piloted the ship through the nebula, got spooked by sensor ghosts and that uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach, the gurgle, that thought, that someone was watching him.

Promontory: I don’t like the sound of that. Theories?

Katsim: There are a multitude of possibilities.

Nilsen: All I can suggest is that there might be something in there, but what?

Lhandon didn’t know what to add; he just knew that it was best avoided. Maybe if he was on his own, he’d have a peek.

Yinn: Artificial gravity? A cloaked object? A microscopic black hole? At this point I can only speculate.

Yinn’s guess was as good as his.

Promontory: Threat assessment?

Katsim: We can’t determine the exact nature of the readings, we can only speculate at this point

Nilsen: Do we get clouds that thick naturally?

Yinn: I suspect this isn't a natural phenomena, and someone's trying to hide something in the cloud. But I can't say that definitively without more data.

Promontory: Mr. Nilsen, reroute the Wild Seed closer to investigate. Maintain our course into OVIV.

Nilsen: Aye sir

Lhandon selected the Wild Steed on the holographic displays and moved it into position, rerouting and telling the shuttle's computer to stay put, standing sentinel at that cloud.

Nilsen: Yinn, I’ve rerouted the wild steeds sensors into your console so you can have a closer look at the cloud.

Promontory: Is that the relativistic mosaic?

Promontory said two words. Lhandon’s brain had no idea what he said.

Katsim: It is

Katsim: There’s a ship, and sensors indicate it is a Starfleet vessel.

Lhandon had a little smile, thinking maybe this would be an easy mission: go in, tow them out, and be back in time to watch the Regalia Romina Grand Prix. It was the last round of the season. Jaxon Culbreth collided with Veron Actia on turn four of lap 32. Lhandon thought it was Actia's fault; the rules say that you must leave a car's width, and Actia turned under braking, causing Culbreth's wheels to collide with Actia’s. Culbreth was forced to retire from the race.

Nilsen: I’ve got the ship's transponder, it’s weak, but…yeah that’s the Unity Dow.

Yinn: Response

Promontory: (still excited) So the Unity Dow is still in the system? That’s great! (beat) But why haven’t they communicated in weeks?

Katsim: The probe indicates it’s currently in orbit around a planet.

Nilsen: My only guess is this system blocks communications.

Yinn: Response

Promontory: An unknown planet? Well that’s…

Lhandon was just about to suggest trying to raise the Unity Dow on comms when Commander Rouiancet’s voice came over the internal comms.

Rouiancet: =/\= Rouiancet to Promontory. =/\=

Promontory: =/\= Go for Promontory =/\=

Rouiancet: =/\= Avander, how's everything up there? =/\=

Promontory: =/\= Uh, I’d say “complicated?” We’re getting some new information as we speak. =/\=

Rouiancet: =/\= I just spoke to some UDP reps, who had some very strong warnings about this system. =/\=

Promontory: =/\= Warnings? What sort of warnings? =/\=

Rouiancet: =/\= Response. =/\=

Promontory: =/\= Well notwithstanding, we have a mission. Our probes have confirmed the location of the Unity Dow orbiting a previously unknown M-class planet. Despite their warnings, I think we’re duty bound to investigate! =/\=

Rouiancet: =/\= Response. =/\=

Promontory: =/\= Understood, Promontory out. =/\=

Promontory: Well you heard the CO, let’s proceed. (beat) Cautiously.

Katsim: Sixty seconds until we break through to the system.

The comms call saved him from a moment of slight embarrassment. If he had suggested trying to raise communication with the Unity Dow, he realized that they wouldn’t have been able to reach it; the cloud was causing too much interference.

But in sixty seconds time, they will be able to call them, and they’ll be able to scan and they can all go home.

And everything will be fine.

Nilsen: She’s flying smooth, looks like nothing in this cloud is causing us any issues at the helm.

Promontory/Yinn: Respons

Katsim: I’d like to continue to monitor that portion of the cloud.  If we could set up probes as an array, information can be transferred from one to another and cut through the interference.

Promontory/Yinn: Response

Nilsen:  Ten seconds until we’re clear

There was a moment of bated breath as the clouds slowly parted like the curtain of a theatre. The system on the other side seemed normal enough. The binary star system stood in the middle, and five planets were quickly identified in this small system.

Katsim was the first get the full read on the system

Katsim: There are five planets, and sensors indicate no sentient life forms.

Lhandon saw it on the sensors just a moment after Katsim said it.

Katsim: The Unity Down is very low on power, only life support is operational…but…

Whenever someone said "but," it was not normally a good thing, particularly if it was said after the words “only life support is operational.”

Nilsen: Sirs, have a look at this this. Only one life pod has launched.

He brought up the holographic scan of the Unity Dow and moved it around to show the empty pod bay.

Nilsen: Why would…

He then paused, as something else got his attention.

Nilsen: The bridge evacuation hatch is open as well.

He moved the scan of the Unity Dow to show the open hatch on the bridge. It opened to the cold, harsh elements of space.

Promontory/Yinn/Katsim : Response

Nilsen: Why would??? ::a hint of worry turning to Promontory:: Why would they do that? They must have had a shuttle or something nearby right?

He feared the worst, his voice betrayed that. The evacuation hatch must have been a last-ditch effort he thought, and the thought that someone might have been there, unprotected from the cold embrace of death that space offers, made his mouth dry.

Promontory/Yinn/Katsim : Response

He packed up his worries in his (metaphorical) kit bag

Nilsen: Aye sir, moving closer. Three-quarters impulse.

The OEB’s engines responded to his holographic pedal press, and the ship moved gracefully forward towards the now empty Unity Dow.

Promontory/Yinn/Katsim : Response

This was not going to be an easy mission.
