((OOC: I’m going to try to get the rest of mine out today, if not, tomorrow. Thanks for bearing with me while I’ve been ill. I’m starting with this one as it’s just the two of us simming and should be a nice gentle easing back into things))
(( Sickbay, Deck 5, USS Octavia E. Butler ))
It had all been worth it. Everything they had experienced in the OVIV system and everything he had experienced on the USS Unity Dow had been worth it to find Barney.
Nilsen: You mentioned you got chased off Gault, what happened? Was it the FAC?
He had so many questions for Barney. He wanted to know everything. How could a whole branch of the family, his father's brother, just not have been mentioned at all? As Barney told his story of how the Ferengi Agricultural Consortium (FAC) had acted all friendly when their smiles hid daggers behind their backs, Lhandon wanted nothing else but to give Barney the biggest hug, march right up to the bridge of the OEB, and fly the Butler all the way to Gault to kick the FAC off his planet.
Barney: No. Yes. The Ferengi acted all friendly, going to help us and give us a deal. They’d have a part ownership in the farm, we’d expand and get rich. Instead of individual farms there would be a consortium and all would benefit equally.
Toz: ::putting her hand on Barney’s shoulder::: Calm down. It’s all over now.
Toz was kind to him, it was the same kindness that she showed to Lhandon when they were both injured.
Barney: Finally, dad decided that rather than stay and be forced out, we’d relocate on our own. I don’t know where he wanted to go, he wouldn’t tell me. But we weren’t quite ready when a couple of men came and talked with dad. After that… that night, we left.
And as the thought of kicking the FAC off his planet came to him, Lhandon understood Barney's position and understood why he was in Starfleet now. He was short of breath as he processed everything and put his own hand on Barney's shoulder.
Nilsen: I’m guessing Wilma was family too?
Barney: No, she wasn’t family. Wilma was a friend. The only friend I had. I didn’t get to say good-bye and then we were told about the shuttle accident and she was killed.
He spoke the next words with utter sincerity, and tried to hide that his eyes were watering.
Nilsen: I’m sorry to hear that. I bet we would have got on if our paths cross eailer. ::Beat:: I know this is a lot, and I want to be selfish here, you are more then welcome to stay on the OEB. ::beat:: In fact I’d like you to stay or at the very least, come down to eight-forward, meet my people, I bet they’d love to get to know you.
There was more he had wanted to know, but he had felt that maybe then wasn't the time for Barney's entire life story. Barney was no doubt worn out and likely needed some time to chill out.
Toz: If he’s up to it, I have no objection. This is one of those cases where the patient needs to tell us what the best treatment is. ::beat:: We should contact the Dow and let them know he’s here.
Nilsen: Yes. You’re right doc, forgive me. I’m…yeah.
He smiled. Today, was a wonderful day.
Toz/Barney: Response
Nilsen: I’ll make sure that all gets sorted for ya. You don’t need to worry about a thing cuz.
Toz/Barney: Response
Nilsen: When you’re ready then, we’ll go down to eight-forward. I think we’re hosting a few of the Dow crew as well, so I think it would be good for both of us, and both our ships.
Toz/Barney: Response
