to Butler IC
OOC: Takes place before Wayward Son.

IC:

((Quarters 1118, Deck 5, USS Ronin))

Nesre’s eyes widened and her mouth opened slightly in surprise.  She
didn’t know Kos beyond what V’Len had told her, but that was the last
thing she had ever expected to hear.

Salo: =/\=Murder?=/\=

Kel:  =/\= Commander Carpenter is furious.  I think he may have charmed
her a bit, or at least misled her enough to think that they shared the
same goal.  =/\=

Salo:  =/\=I’m assuming that happened during the course of your mission.=/\=

Nesre paused. Although she knew of Kos’ ire in response to V’Len, she
had hoped that maybe some day he would come to terms with it. If she had
known him, she would have tried to help him work through his grief at
the loss of the brother he knew and encourage him to get to know the new
brother.  However, she had not been a part of V’Len’s life then, and if
she were to guess, Kos had never sought out counselling.

Kel:::sighing::  =/\= Well at the moment he’s on his own. I can’t really
help him, particularly if he’s murdered someone. He’s claiming insanity
and that the person he killed was poisoning himself and others. I have
no idea how that will wash with the folks on DS33.=/\=

Insanity was a route that people took when desperate to get out of
consequences.  In her experience, those who truly were insane did not
publicly proclaim it, but it was addressed by those assigned to assess
the culprits.

Salo: =/\=In the meantime, you suffer some consequences of your own.
Those look pretty deep.=/\=

Kel:  ::chuckling:: =/\= Yes indeed I suspect I’ve got a week or so
before I’m totally healed up. Should be just in time for the wedding.=/\=

Both of Nesre’s eyebrow shot up.  She sometimes wondered if V’Len knew
how he came across and made comments out of context like that on
purpose.  He and Rox had done something similar with their pet names
that had confused not only her, but everyone else around them.

Salo: =/\=Your wedding?=/\=

Kel:  ::laughing:: =/\= No not mine.  One of our new ensigns is
apparently engaged, her fiance came all the way from Denali.  We’ve also
have a guest from the USS Constitution. =/\=

Salo: =/\=Oh!  Well, that sounds lovely.=/\=

Although the names were familiar, Nesre had never any experience on
Denali Station

Kel:  =/\= Speaking of Denali, I actually met Commander DeVeau since we
last spoke.  She’s second officer over there. =/\=

Salo: =/\=Commander DeVeau?=/\=

Kel: =/\=  Very nice person. Dark hair, very pregnant. I half thought
she was going to go into labour at lunch. =/\=

Nesre paused, trying to think about a face to go with the name, but it
was fruitless.  While it also sounded familiar, she couldn’t place it
beyond that it was likely someone she’d heard of at one point or another.

Salo: =/\=I’m afraid I don’t know her.  How did you meet?=/\=

Kel: =/\= We were both on Starbase 118. =/\=

Salo: =/\=So it wasn’t actually at Denali?=/\=

Kel: ::proudly:: =/\= I’ve been assisting in training missions on SB118
when I can. =/\=

V’Len was particularly pleased with this development. While Starfleet
life was challenging, he’d made great friends and done amazing things.
Being able to help ready new cadets was perhaps as rewarding for him as
practising medicine.

Her eyes brightened at that news, for she hadn’t realised he was
participating in that program.  Nesre, herself, had considered it, but
with her place in the Gamma Quadrant, doing so wasn’t exactly
convenient, and she also felt she couldn’t take time away from the ship.

Salo: =/\=When did you start doing that?=/\=

Kel: =/\= I did one cadet cruise right at the end of my last shore leave
and I’m hoping to do one during this leave. ::thinking::  It’s sometimes
hard to believe we were once bright eyed, uncertain cadets. =/\=

Indeed, she herself had been there once upon a time, and while six years
wasn’t all that long ago, it seemed almost a lifetime with all that had
occurred since then.  For V’Len, it had been half as long, but she could
understand how it felt like more time than that.

Salo: And it’s hard to believe that it wasn’t all that long ago.

Kel:  =/\= Rosro’s getting ready to do her cadet cruise soon. Hard to
believe my little sister will be out here. =/\=

Rosro was from tother half of V’Len, that of his trill side.  From what
she understood, that family had been far more accepting of the new
normal, and those two especially had remained close.

Salo: =/\=I bet she’s excited.  I’m glad you two stay in touch.=/\=

With the difficulties on one side, she could imagine that the positivity
on the other was a balm to his soul at times.

V’Len sat for a moment.  There couldn’t be a wider gulf between Kos and
Rosro.  Before the accident he’d been equally close to both, but now Kos
had utterly rejected him. Rosro on the other hand had taken it in
stride. More than anyone she understood the risks of space exploration.
Trill society was also much more comfortable with change when people
were joined. He and Rosro remained thick as thieves.

Kel: =/\= So, how about you?  How’s life on the Oumuamua? Hows the GQ? =/\=

Salo: =/\=Well, we’re actually not on the Oumuamua any longer.=/\=
