((Gator Deck – Quarter Deck, Deck 12, USS Octavia E. Butler))
Winters was livid, and Ithri observed the ire of the woman as it was written all over there face and in her body. Even without antennae, she was easy to read, and after a conversation with other officers, including the new executive officer, which wasn’t good. Ithri knew she had a temper, and it had gotten the best of her on more than one occasion. She had to temper it, and had learned to do so to some extent in her training on Andoria, but her time in the Marines, however short it was, had tempered it more. Winters, however, had allowed hers to take control, and the consequences of that weren’t yet known. The reason behind her anger? The return of Jack Kessler, and the desire of the command staff to return him to his former position as a tactical officer.
Sh’shelor: And what did you say to this?
Her initial response puzzled the Andorian. First, she stared at her directly in the eyes, but that only lasted a moment before she leaned over, as if suffering from some sort of hyperventilation. The two shallow breaths certainly gave an indication that her breathing was laboured. A minute later, however, she spoke, though her tone rippled with disgust.
Winters: I essentially told Promontory that if he was actually considering reinstating Jack then he probably wasn’t the right first for first officer of this ship.
Ithri’s antennae, which up to that point had been curled toward Winters as she spoke, straightened up at attention in surprise. To say such a thing to someone who was in a leadership position would have severe consequences. Meanwhile, the woman curled in on herself, arms upon her knees, head drooped as she stared at the floor.
Sh’shelor: Is this what you really believe?
Winters: (looking up to Ithri and again shaking her head) Who in their right mind takes a prisoner, who has only been back a few days and says ‘yeah sure, lets get you back to work.’?
She unfurled from the half foetal position she had taken and began to pace back and forth across the room. Ithri’s stark blue eyes followed every step she took. The entire situation set her on edge, and the anger had not subsided.
Sh’shelor: You think this was wrong.
It was a statement more than a question. Obviously Winters disagreed with the choice.
Winters: I totally disagree with them Ithri. I don’t care what the medical or psych profiles say. Jack compartmentalizes everything. He’s a spitting image of his father in that regards.
She knew Kessler well enough to say that about him, but Ithri didn’t know if it was accurate. The woman pressed a hand upon her forehead, as if her head ached, and continued wearing a path in the carpet. Distress coloured her the features, deepening the lines upon her fine face and casting shadows over her countenance.
Sh’shelor: And your position?
Winters: No, I am pretty sure I ended my stint as Tactical Officer and probably will get thrown off the ship if Promontory has his way. I am sure he want’s a ‘Yes sir’ officer in Tactical and I made it clear that was not going to be me.
If Winters acted half as vehemently as she had described, then Ithri would not be surprised with that sort of consequence. She brought it upon herself for acting so disrespectfully to authority.
Sh’shelor: What do you wish me to say?
Winters: Response
Ithri considered that for a minute. She didn’t know Kessler well, but she did know that Starfleet had a process in place, an Intelligence network that was second to none, and she had been impressed with what she had learned about the organisation since she’d started working in Starfleet.
Sh’shelor: Your concerns are valid. Your response was stupid.
And as always, the Andorian didn’t mince words.
Winters: Response
Sh’shelor: That does not matter. You should have not done so that way. It would have been better to call for ushaan. But this is Starfleet, and that is not the way.
Winters: Response
Ithri’s antennae crossed, then uncrossed and spread apart, but her stare upon her fellow marine did not waver. Instead, her eyes narrowed and she leaned forward, as if to drive home her point.
Sh’shelor: I am not saying this. I am saying that if you think he is compromised, then you must prove it yourself. Take the action to protect rather than rage with words.
Winters: Response
